New Nostalgia Profile
« on: February 14, 2014, 12:18:33 PM »
Here are some pics of my new GS Bearcat. I am hoping to be able to test it out sometime in the next couple weeks. All it needs now is some decals and some lines.

Very nice David. I especially like the nice looking pieces of balsa you have attached behind that really great engine. It will be a blast to fly (HS) and large enough to fly a decent LS. I'm looking foreward to your fist flight and hope it makes it to the NATs. Remember as Bill Bischoff says, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. Will you be using one of Henry's quarter wave mufflers on it?  Eric

I haven't quite decided on the muffler yet. This engine has been run without the muffler and 50% nitro before this plane and runs pretty good.  I used the muffler on my other Nelson and it ran a good high speed but nowhere near what you and Burt run. I am waiting on my carb to get here then I will try running it and see.

David,

When I first decided to run Nelson I called and talked to Henry about the combat 36 (1993) and he told me I should try the heavy case Nelson like yours and the one Burt and I use. At that time he told me that I should run with the quarter wave muffler with 10% fuel and not try to run it with higher nitro as the engine muffler combination was built to run together on 10%. At that time there were no provisions for a large quarter wave muffler so had to wait a couple of years till the AMA rules were changed. My Nelsons ran better as the years went by and it wasn't until the 2000s that they really started to perform. Burt puts a lot of time on his engines and they broke in after just a couple of years. He does run a little faster than I but has the later engines. He is real sharp with the needle settings. I'm thinking yours will improve as you get more time on them, thats another reason to practice with them. They may seem pricey at first glance but will run forever without any replacement parts.  Eric

You might want to check the top view of the kit wing vs. your 3-view documentation.  The famous "crank" in the leading edge (or lack thereof in the kit's wing) was a point of controversy many years ago.  Maybe under the current Nostalgia rules it doesn't matter anymore.

There are no scale points in Nostagia Profile so 3-views and scale documentation are irrelevant.  As long as the design preceeds the cutoff date, the historic model bonus applies.

Is this the Brodak re-issue of the original GS kit? Just wondering as I have an original kit that I plan to build for Nostalgia when I get a "roundtuit".  8)

Will the Nelson engine receive bonus points in Nostalgia? No axe to grind, just interested.

No, the engine bonus is for Non-schneurle engines (But it should blow the 20 point bonus away easily)

It is the original GS kit with some structural changes. Maple motor mounts and some added balsa in the fuse to keep it from knocking the tail off. And some plywood added for landing gear reinforcement. As for the engine bonus I wasnt too worried about the 20 points I just want all of my nostalgia planes to go as fast as they possibly can.

Thanks, I will have to take a second look at mine. Power will be along the lines of an ST C35 though, that'll be fast enough for me. 8)

Never had any complaints with my  G-S Bearcat.   Of course I only won Sportsman one time.

Very nice to see vintage kits built, better than sitting on a shelf for years  and collecting dust ,  can't wait to see it fly

Well I test flew it today and it survived so I guess that is a successful test. Needs some tip weight and get the bellcrank working smoother and it should be pretty good.

Thanks for the3 video!  I am wondering about the color scheme a bit. No big deal, but does it reflect a full size B-Cat?

No as far as I know it is not a real Bearcat scheme. But it was a real Hellcat scheme(My orange might be a bit brighter than the original). The rules do not require a scheme to be correct for the specific airplane just a real military scheme and in Nostalgia Profile there is no scale bonus points just the bonus for correct time period of the model.

Shame on you boy(yes I can call him boy as I am much older than he).   Didn't anyone tell you a Bearcat was not supposed to hang?   Just razzin yah and if things go well may see yah this year.

By the way used to compete against his Dad many years ago.

I have to admit, that is a super cool paint scheme.  I was doing a little looking online and you could do that orange on TBM's, TBF's and probably some F4F's as well. VD~
I've started plenty...would be nice to finish something!!!
