Carrier contest in Tulsa
« on: March 24, 2012, 09:51:52 AM »
What do you guys think of a carrier contest in Tulsa the first weekend in August? Picking a date is hard that doesn't conflict with anything else and this is the best I could come up with. I know the odds are pretty good it will be hot, but we do have an airconditioned club house to take breaks in.

We are thinking of having PAMPA profile stunt (all PA classes but only profiles) on Saturday then flying Carrier on Sunday. This might give the stunt guys a reason to come and stick around for the fun on Sunday. We could fly most classes of Carrier or we could try adapting the PA classes over to Carrier. Trophies are not an issue and we are willing to try anything. If this works we would make it an annual event.

We don't have a deck and will probably use our take off pad, it's long enough. If this goes, might be able talk the Gluedobbers into building a deck for the next time.

Let me know if you might be able to attend and if you have any ideas that might help.
Thanks
Bob

Bob, there is a traditional contest in Wichita during the first of August. Not sure exactly which weekend, but the first or second rings a bell. And then the Albuquerque contest a week later. Might check with Kevin Seaton since he is usually the CD.

As long as you're into that time of the year, how about the last weekend in July? That would be after the NATs.

The Wichita Contest is always held the 2nd weekend in the month, that puts the 2012 Contest on Aug 11-12.

I'd show up. I'd even bring spare airplanes! FWIW, awards don't mean a thing to me. Something fun we did once was to have a raffle with carrier-appropriate prizes. Each flight in any class, completed through successful landing, earned a raffle ticket. This gave everybody a chance at the goodies, and encouraged people to make all of their flights, not just one per class. (It's also a reason to enter your profile in Class I). Just an idea.

BTW, how big is the takeoff pad?

Thanks for the info gang, looks like Aug 4th & 5th will be it. Far enough from the NATS that everyone will have a chance to get reorganized and doesn't conflict with anything withen striking distance. I'll get the sanction sent in ASAP.

Our take off pad is 6 foot wide and 42 foot long. We used it last year when we held our Postal Carrier event and it worked out really well. We didn't have the rule book number of aresting cables but it didn't seem to be an issue. Those that missed a hook up would have missed regardless. Most glaring issue might be that it is cement but even with several that had never flown carrier before we didn't have any problems with anything being tore up worse than if the deck had been wood.

So plan to come if you can and bring a profile stunt ship for Saturday. We have 3 circles and should finish up early enough on Saturday to get the deck set up and get in a few practice flights.

Started filling out the sanction.. We really don't want to exclude anything with a tail hook or anybody that wants to fly but at the same time we would rather not add 42 events.

Any thoughts on letting anything above a 15 fly in Sportsman rather than limiting it to profiles? I also wouldn't be against adding a Sportsman 15 class for the beginners and let the ones that can actually get a 5 minute slow with a 15 battle it out amongst themselves. Of course assuming we have enough entries..

Heck I don't know, we have a more or less clean slate and can pretty well do anything, might be a good contest to experiment at to see how some of the ideas in the rules proposals would work or not. Like try the PA classes (Beg, Int, Adv and Exp)and just have 4 events, fly anything you want (with a hook) in any class.

As it stands, thinking having Class I, Class II, Profile, Sportsman and 15.

Is this what we want to do or ?? I'm for sure open to suggestions..

Bob, just a thought.  Why not just combine Class 1 and 2?  Many contests do that. It keeps prizes down and many contests don't have Class 2 entries anyway.  Just a thought.

PS Need a Carrier kit for a prize?

Bob, at all of the contest out here on the west coast we will have a few events that you can trophy in and then you can bring any plane and fly it for top 20 in "any class or event". So everyone that shows up gets to compete even if its only against himself. If you make a point of this it might help bring in a few more fliers.  Eric

The main idea is to get participation. As Joe said, you can combine Class I and II awards, but still allow a person to enter both classes. However, they would only be eligible for one trophy. If it will encourage people, you could have sportsman and expert classes in profile, 15, and CL I/II. And like Eric said, you could also allow people to make official flights in ANY recognized carrier class, just to earn a position on the NCS top twenty. I'd love the opportunity to fly my nostalgia profile Crusader, even if it wasn't a trophy event.

I'm not sure about big deviations in the aircraft requirements, however. If you want to allow 40 FP's in Sportsman profile I would consider that no big deal, but for example if you want to waive the profile requirement, or the minimum wing area, for Sportsman profile, I think you would be better served by having a Sportsman Class I event.

Sanction is going out in today's mail and I uploaded a flier to the Gluedobbers web site..

http://www.tulsacl.com/Public/SummerContestFlier.pdf

Should be a really fun weekend and am hoping our idea of holding a basic PA event, (Profile using PAMPA classes) will bring a few out that might not attend a Carrier only contest. Who knows, we might get a few converts out of the deal.

Bill and others, Thanks for the tips and guidance. Makes sense.. I left the Carrier classes kinda open, thinking we can make adjustments depending on who shows up with what. The more I think about it the more I think adding a Sportsman 15 class is a good idea. We have at least 3 locals with 15 carrier airplanes that I'm sure would enter Sportsman 15 and two that would probably enter Open 15. Don't see any reason to not let anyone that wants to fly for Top 20, works for me. Awards are not a big deal for us as we can make (or not make) as many as needed on site and they are pretty nice souvenirs.
