Savage plans
« on: January 13, 2013, 05:47:00 PM »
I'm sure some of you out there might remember this plane and I was wondering if there was anybody that knew what plans this might have been made from. I am pretty sure that it isnt the Berkley plans because I remember this one being bigger than that. I would like to build one down the road.

Thanks
David

The Berkeley Savage kit was a 3/8" = 1' scale model and was only about a 28" wing span.  (I have two kits of the thing.)  The model in the photos appears to be bigger than that.  Also, that model took some liberties with the shape of the engine nacelles, the vertical tail and the size shape of the canopy. The kit has carved balsa fuselage and nacelle shells and also had spun metal cowls, built up rib and fabric/tissue wing.

I know of one person who built the Berkeley kit for Carrier, but that goes back to the 60's or so.  I do not know what he used for engines.  The kit plans say engines from .045 to .099.  (Two modern .10 engines would make this Berkely size model a rocket, but getting a good low speed would be a challenge.)

I am not aware of any plans published in the magazines for a carrier model of the Savage.  There was a supurb rubber powered model, stick and tissue, about this same size published in Flying Models,  Feb 86.  Because of the size, I do not think there could be any relationship between that FF job and modifying it to get this carrier thing.

Dave:

I built the Berkeley AJ-1 Savage model when I was about 15 (OMG, 58 years ago). I powered it with two .049's and it flew well. Well, that is, it flew very stable. It was the typical Berkely hollow log construction, so it was not very light. Consequently, its size and weight would probably not lend itself well to the Carrier event. The pictures that you posted definitely are of a larger rendition than the Berkeley kit. It does not appear very scale, however. The canopy is way too small. Like Keith said, it appears to take many liberties.

The AJ-1 would probably be a difficult Carrier model. But it would make an excellent scale model. I have done a lot of research on this plane for personal reasons. The model that I mentioned above was given to me by my Mom and Dad as a Christmas gift. They are both gone now and I have decided to attempt to build a larger, more legitimate scale model of the AJ-1 in their honor. I have drawn my plans to just under 60" in wingspan. It will have retracts, flaps and electric motors.

I hope you are successful in your search for the related data. I often find this search for scale detail to be one of thefun parts of building a scale model.

I thought I had a copy of the Savage plans attached to my post above.

no need to get upset, just pointing out were these old plans are compiled, there are lots of old carrier and scale plans posted

David -  I don't remember ever hearing what he used for plans to build this.  I had drawn up the Class 2 Spearfish for him and the Savage had construction similar to that.  It was also about the same time as the FM article mentioned by Keith - so perhaps he made some working drawings based on those two sources.

David,
If you are really interested in building the savage, I can give you a tiled or full pdf of the Berkeley plan scaled to a 44" span. I also have a rib set I designed some time back for the original size. The wing is designed to build as the plan shows, no dihederal but taper on the bottom only. I can scale it and the ribs to the 44" size fairly easy. Sorry no fuse formers.
John .

David,
blowing up to about 44" span came out OK. Bit fuzzy but usable. Should print at Staples or similar. The tiled version is sharper but to big to post. If you want the tiled version I'll have to email it, too large to post

Thanks for your help and sorry for being a little delayed in getting back to this, work has been keeping me very busy. I did happen to run across a book that evidently I bought at some time about the Savage that has multiple 3 views and one has 6 cross sections of the fuse and 4 of the nacelles so there are my formers. It is a Steve Ginter book that has some good pics. Well hopefully in the next couple of years I can get one done.

Thanks again

A great place to find books is www.squadron.com, they mainly sell plastic models, but also sell the full size books that we all use. You can search by aircraft type and they have publishers from around the world that you don't commonly see in other stores. There are some great books that come out of Japan and other countries in eastern Europe. The UK also has some books that are worth getting.

I looked on squadron and they only list two books for the Savage. The first book they sell is the Ginter book. The 2nd book only mentions the Savage so probably not worth getting.
