Title: 1/2A Carrier
Post by: john vlna on January 24, 2014, 06:06:10 PM
My club decided to have a 1/2A carrier contest this year. Basically 15 profile rules with a restriction on engine size to .075 (maybe better called 1/2 15?). I've decided to build a TBF, see attached, area will be about 135 sq in. Construction is just like any other all sheet 1/2A except it is a bit bigger. Power will be the AP .061, with 2.4GHz throttle.  y1

OMG!! John, tell me it isn't true!  Your going to use an IC engine?  What in the World must you be thinking of?  Oh the Humanity,  I can't write anymore!

Very cool, John.  I've wanted the guys here to try it for awhile. Please take lots of pictures and/or video. Can't wait to see how it turns out! #^ #^ #^

Joe,
Its a IC Motor? Now I understand why I couldn't figure out how to hook up the esc.

John, I like the TBF choice. One of my favorites.
Thanks

John -

What line length will you be using?  And are you going to use a full size deck?

Mike,

lines will be 42 ft, no deck, we will just layout the lines on our field. We have a concrete donut but it is sized to 60 ft, so it won't match exactly. we have done both AMA and 15 carrier this way before without any problems, and 1/2A should work as well. I routinely land throttled 1/2A's on the runway all the time.

Progress has been slow but the 1/2A TBF is beginning to look like a plane.
The tank is a bit large but it is what I had in the used parts bin. The small black thing is the throttle servo, controlled via 2.4GHz.

Just about done, just a few parts to final mount. Hope the snow melts enough to fly in a week or so. Photos in two parts due to size restrictions.

Part 2 including some hook details, just like the big boys.

PS the marking are from the USS Randolph. I have actually since shots of this plane landing on the TV, don't recall the program but it was on the Mil Channel.

My club first flew 1/2A carrier back in the late 60's, but as Doc stated it is just a local thing.

Just a few final pictures.
Pic 1 shows where the battery will go, the flight battery will be a bit smaller but I don't have one yet.
Pic 2 the receiver and back side of the servo, The receiver is mounted will Velcro.
Pic 3 engine side shows throttle hookup
Pic 4 Right side
Pic 5 Left side the little red thing is a piece of tube to hold the antenna wire in place. I will paint it to match!
