In our old thread on this history of the rules and versions, I posted the 1952 newsletter which outline the 1953 Nats rules:

Those original rules had provision for a 1/2A class, but I've never seen any reference to it actually being flown -even at the Nats. Locally, I had a couple of 1/2A models that I was flying with the Cox 3-line handle and a Cox reedy with a rotating cylinder throttle baffle that flew really well. I even built one with a TD, but never got the plane completed. Never got anyone else interested in trying it though. I wonder if there is any record of the original 1/2A event being contested?

In the late 60's and early 70's we had 1/2a carrier contests in our area, (Wash DC) , and so did Cleveland. In fact one of the Winning airplanes from that time was raffled off at our Christmas party this year. It was a .049, reed valve. With a exhaust throttle restrict or. The plane was a sig skyray.

You know, with the advent of 2.4 gHz, a 2-line 1/2A Carrier model might work nicely!
The excuse was always that you couldn't operate the 3rd line (throttle) due to the poor line tension, plus the weight of the third line was a drag - literally. Could be fun and cheap!

No, I've been teaching after work for a while now and have not had much time. I have one more night of testing for my class and should have more time. I have two new carrier planes to test run, hopefully this weekend.

The excuse was always that you couldn't operate the 3rd line (throttle) due to the poor line tension, plus the weight of the third line was a drag - literally. Could be fun and cheap!
I'd like to make it work with a third line. But if I have to I'll try 2.4. Cox made throttle handles at one time and plastic models for them. Just playing around with it.
