NW Sport .40 - Info
« on: November 19, 2011, 12:33:10 AM »
How about a run-down on this class for those of us in the rest of US of A.

Is the engine size the only deviation from the AMA Profile rules?

Any .40 allowed?

Only OS 40, 35 FP or Tower 40s are allowed. For more details go to "flyinglines (dot) org". That is the excellent on-line newsletter of the Nortwest Control Line Clubs that originated the event. Rules are posted there.  8)

Most AMA profile rules in effect except a few.

Motors as mentioned above. Factory mufflers as supplied with the engine are manditory. Muffler pressure allowed.
no restrictions on fuel, but there is a proposal to chnage that to just 10% llowing a FP.35 plane to enter both the NW event and the AMA Profile event. Voting next month.
Any 300 sq in plane with Navy markings is allowed, no scale points . No inflight changing of leadout position allowed (no sliders)

Mike Potter thought up the event to get newbies or re-treads interested in giving Carrier a try.  Off to a fair start this year it is hoped that the event grows , particularly with those that really are not interested in pushing the envelope.  This is a real fun event with scores so far very close.

My "Wildcat" profile ARF/C kits were designed with this event in mind and are a natural for the novice participant.

Thanx for the info., sounds like a nice event. Lots of .40 LA's on fleaBay.
Not many engine choices anymore with the .36 limit. I have no clue were to buy a Nelson or Wiley??  ..or if I could afford one.

Actually there are a lot of engine good engine choices within the .36 limit: OS 32, Webra 32 & 36, Super Tigre .34, Thunder Tiger .36, Evo .36, Magnum .36 to name a few. Not all are current but all are available and affordable. Any can be used successfully in profile. Don't need no Nelson or Wiley to get started.  8)

The primary premise of this class was to involve more people in carrier.
since Stunt is pretty active in the NW, there seems to be a lot of people at contests that may be coerced into being involved in an additional event. One of the thoughts I had,, ( and I think where the originators came up with the idea) is that since the 40 FP was such a common engine, a lot of stunt guys have one in hand already, not to mention they are constantly available on that dreaded auction site. SO this makes it more accessable to get people to tie an extra line on something for throttle, and go try carrier,,
For years the rat race had me going around in circles, Now I do it for fun!

Does the 40LA have any performance advantage over the 40FP? If not, has there been any consideration given to allowing the 40LA? I only ask because I have a low time 40LA R/C engine that I'd love to sell somebody for $30.00. ;D

Bill, changing any of the rules for a NW event takes abit of doing. First, only people that have flown Carrier for example in the last 5 years have voting rights. the proposal has to be submitted and after a 30 day discussion period only Carrier people in this case can vote.  My suggestion is to put up your engine in the classified section and offer it there. Or perhaps one of the readers of this column will have already contacted you on the sale.

Speaking of rule changes Joe, I think your proposal to limit the fuel to 10% nitro is a great idea and in the spirit of the event. My FP-35 powered Devestator is ready to go next NW Regionals.  8)

Pete, Thanks!  I sure hope the rule passes. I normally don't attend the Regionals prefering to spend my money by going to the Brodak Fly-In.  Either contest may not be for me this year unless my wife's health improves.  I hope you do make it to the Regionals and do well there. Would you please send me a piture of your Devestator?

Sure Joe, I'll post it here. Fuselage outline was done by John Brownlee. Wing is from a Shoestring. I built it as a follow up to my Wildcat based on a Buster (BusterCat). Flying wise, a real floater but has made deck landings 8)

Pete, The ship is a perfect fit for the new NW .40 event!  Don't forget to lock the slider in one place for the NW .40 event and then unlock it and use it in AMA Profile when your at Eugene for the Regionals. Thanks for the pictures.

I disconnected the slider release on this one. 35FP doesn't have the power and I don't have the skill for successful prop hanging. It works perfect for NW Sport as I can adjust it for a compromise between high and low speeds.  8)

I like this idea and respect the intent. I think LA .40 has no advantage over an FP-.40 but more are available since FP-.40/.35's have been off market much longer, but so be it.  I almost converted a good Tower .40 into a speed limit combat engine but never enlarged carb mount hole.  I have FP-.35 in combat plane but have not flown it since. I did you it for a couple stunt ships. I could use carb off a LA .40 and think it will work. [gave away to many new carbs over the years.] Try the Tower first I guess.
I sent payment for one of Joe's ARF's and now can play with a sport ship.  #^
