Will this get me kicked off of stunthanger!?
« on: August 08, 2013, 09:43:54 AM »
Hadda do it, guys!  After almost two and a half years of working on the Pawnee six minutes at a time, I missed my nice work bench.  I spent an unbelievable amount of time this AM cleaning the blasted thing!  I'm so proud of my accomplishment I just can't resist posting it on here!!!
So, am I banned for life?  Or just for the rest of the season?  Or for ten minutes? ~^ n~ :! :! :!

We loathe you Will, but we'll be cordial about it.

The last time I really cleaned my workbench (six months ago) I was putting stuff away that had been dropped there when we moved in ten years ago.  It's almost that messy again...

Tim, I think there should be a compound word for that - you know, one that would be in the dictionary meaning "to loathe cordially."  Let's all put our heads together and develop one! LL~ LL~ LL~

"Good" Will Hinton,

Nice bench.

Did you build that bench?

Good job, Coach, and I feel better now that you guys are allowing me to stay cordiloathealy!!

Charles, yes, I did build the bench.  In fact, it was built at the house where we lived until '96 and then moved here.  I had to cut it down to get it in this shop and then build it back.  It became more functional and much larger then!

You call that clean!!  What is all the clutter on the one end?  Really a clean bench and clean floor means you have to get started on something.   I had my bench clean for at least a day since I moved to the shop.   H^^

Thanks Tom - she's doing a whole lot better.  It's been a little over 2 months since they cancelled the harsh chemo and she's eating and tasting again, not living in the bathroom, and her hair has started back in.  (Almost 1./8" now!)
We have only 6 radiation treatments left, so after next week the daily 60 mile round trips are over and maybe I'll get around to doing that flight report you asked for.  (You guessed it, no flights yet.)

All-in-all, things are getting a bit simpler here.  I'm ready!  (To avoid total degradation I put the fuse for my Tri-Pacer on the bench; does that help?) ???

Geoff, that's exactly why I left the clutter Coach talked about on that end!  I thought it would be enough to spare me painful notions!

Sparky, I'll measure the bench all out tomorrow and post it here.  it's getting late and the old man needs his beauty sleep!

So true Will, but the clutter needs to be cleared occasionally because stuff gets lost.

Now that I'm retired, the office desk where I used to run our business isn't cleaned off too often but when I can't find a hobby knife—and I know there are four floating around—it's time to clean up the desk in the workshop. y1

Yeah pard, but you obviously dunno what that is!  (Gotcha.) :!  Sorry guys, this was aimed at Jeff Traxler for his comment.  It could have been misplaced and misunderstood so I figured i better change it a bit.

Hey, we all need our beauty sleep.   Even tho it hasn't helped me any.   Especially when the wife turns off the TV.

First things first, Geoff, please notice my post right after your last one has been modified!  It was aimed at Trx, not you.

second, for sparky and any others who are curious:  my bench is 42 by 60 and 38" high.  I'm 6'1" so need the extra height for comfortable working.  Folks should tailor their benches to fit their height and then they can work longer with less fatigue.
There's a FULL SIZE drawer right at the top that is on a double set of full extension slides that i married for the use - it holds my plans in an unfolded state to better preserve them.  (There's also a couple of guitar templates in there that I use a lot.)
The bench is on wheels, two of them castoring, and I can wheel it over to the other side of my shop for floor cleaning and maintenance.
The back side has shelves that old Magnum boxes fit in to hold balsa scraps in one, covering materials in the other, ply in one, and music wire, fiberglass and CF in the bottom one.
I really like the setup, and the "clutter", by the way, is my tool cradles with all the nasty sharp stuff in them as well as the different adhesives - all close at hand.

OK, Brother Will, as Second in Command I am imposing a 15 minute time out for scaring everyone with that absurdly clean work area.  (and like a Judge in CLAP, my decision is final)  You will be left up to your own character as to when you comply.  Any further stunts like this could lead to serious repercussions  Consider this your warning!

Will, no offence taken, no apology required. Here is a pic of my workshop when it was first set up. The desk is approx 3' x 6' and the half that is supported by the modesty panel is dead flat. There was a drawer pedestal attached to top on the open side but I removed it and fitted castors. When i first obtained the desk, there was about 1mm sag in the middle of the open side but that may be a little smaller now with the drawers not hanging from the top.

As I said, when I cannot find one of four knives on the desk or on the bench behind, I know it's time for a clean up.

Will, yes, I do actually work there. Note that I said the pic was taken when I first set up the space. The stuff in the right foreground is all gone, replaced by a cupboard with a scroll saw and the belt and disk sander. The timber under the shelves is acoustic ply—up market peg board that I scored quite cheaply as an offcut—and is now covered with hooks that carry several different, if related, items per hook because I don't have enough space.

But remember where this started. There are times when I cannot find a knife—despite knowing that there are four floating around somewhere.

When I reach that point, I restore the work space to something resembling the pic and start cluttering it up again.
