Am I better off glassing the wheel pants or using silk span ??? They are going on a wing gear plane used on grass.Should I drill the hole for the gear before I glass/silkspan or after ??? Not real sure how to hide the gear since I want to have the wheels removable. I figured I'd use nylon gear clips and screw to the pants. I am going to make up a set of LG with gear doors also.

:! Some one that you might get in touch with is Keith Trostle, some time back he had a set that he'd built that could be seperated to change the wheels as needed.
I don't remember what forum they were on but he visits here at times.
Good luck and keep us up to date............... #^

For balsa wheel pants, light fiberglass is the way to go. Apply using "Z-poxy", it sands easy-light application to apply the fiberglass, sand lightly, a second coat for filler and strength. I like to drill and fit the piece before the fiberglass is applied. Sig 1/2 ounce fiberglass or K&N 3/4ounce fiberglass works well. Don't worry about doing it all with one piece (although you can) - just one piece at a time, let dry, then apply the second. Also don't worry about the edges. After the epoxy dries a few swipes with 230 grit sandpaper will trim the excess fiberglass off cleanly. 8)

Looks good, Lee, and you will be glad you glassed them. Take apart wheel pants are not difficult at all. Split them down the middle, add blind nuts on one side and they are good to go. You can then solder a piece to the gear wire and be able to affix them from the *inside* before you screw them together. makes for easy wheel changes when you wear them out. y1
