Weight Problem?
« on: November 30, 2017, 03:08:01 PM »
I have been given this Strega profile. I'm thinking it might be kind of "porky" as it weighs 46 oz's now. It was in an accident where the wing got crushed on one side. (All fixed now) I also added a shear web and cross piece to the (overly) hollowed out ribs.

I finally got all the other minor misalignment's fixed and decided to assemble and weigh it.

Here's the stats; 52" WS, 572 squares (13 X 9 ) That white pasty primer is very thick and I'm thinking about trying to sand off an oz or two. Do you think its worth the trouble?

And don't say forget about it, it is a pukie profile!  LL~ LL~

Remember it was "GIVEN" to me!

Jerry

PS: I'm going to Mono Coat the wings.

Not You? Just the Plane?

I think I might have been offered that plane by Kim once.
I picked it up and couldn't believe how heavy it was, it has a LOT of primer on it.

My guess is you have 4+ oz of primer on the plane, so sanding it all off and then monocoting what you can will bring it back to 46-47 oz ready to go
Which is not ideal but is flyable.

Jerry,
Well it's a little porky so sand off as mush primer as much as you can.  If the fuse is sands down to smooth finish that has to woodgrain filled, stop there and paint it.  As you stated you didn't built it but now its time to save this project and make it right.  You can monocoat it from there or use the SLC covering on it to help keep the weight down.
The SLC covering is great stuff and can be painted with dope or whatever but try and keep it as light as possible for good performance in the end.  You already have a good start on it so keep it up.

Just my opinion, but even it it comes in at 50 plus it will be OK.  An old rule of thumb is divide the wing area by ten and the max weight will be 57 ounces and still fly well.

Later,
Mikey

Hi Mikey,

I have stripped almost all of the primer aft of the C.G. but I've been sick and haven't gotten back to it. I think I can get it well under the 57 oz's you mentioned.

Thank you, Jerry
