Vector 40 kit Correction step 10
« on: February 16, 2021, 10:46:12 AM »
Step 10 "Unpin the wing and turn it over." A previous correction says to next "Put a 1/8" shim under each end of the wing at R-11." This is incorrect. The shim should be 1/16" because you have to take into account the 1/16" sheeting you glued on in the previous steps.

According to the instruction booklet I have, Step 9 is fitting the first of the LE sheeting.

The LE sheeting is attached to the spars and the spars are at the max thickness point of the wing.

Therefore, I would be placing the shims under the LE sheeting at the spars and that should take care of the shim thickness.

I might add that the deep spar material provided in my die cut kit — yes, it's old — was wide enough so I had both pieces laser-cut so that for all but the last couple of bays on the inboard side where the lead-out overlaps, my wing will be a full D-tube. I suggested that to John B as a running change several years ago, but I don't know whether he took it up.

Step 11: "Glue two 3/16" x 3/8" trailing edge caps into place" Vector Parts list: Trailing edge cap:  3/16 x 1/4". Well which is it? Can't be both. I went through the whole kit and found no caps of either dimension anyway.

If the bottom of the spar without LE sheeting is shimmed up off the table 1/8th of an inch, after sheeting the top of the LE and turning it over, you can't use an 1/8th shim under the spar because you now have an additional 1/16" of leading edge sheeting over the spar. It should be a 1/16" shim, unless you want dihedral.

Something the you need to do is check that the fuselage will be wide enough on the inside to carry the fuel tank that you want.
I mention this from experience.

I picked up my granite slabs today. He gave me 3 pieces. At over one inch thick they should retain their flatness. Pictured is the 72"x 10". I used paper on top of the door  to shim the sheet rock and then check for flatness. After that I put the granite slab on top. After checking for flatness of the stone, and believe me it's flat, I added the 2nd piece of sheet rock on top to stick the pins too. After this Vector 40 build I plan on using the 3/8" steel rod method. For now, being able to pin this wing accurately by measuring from the work surface to the center line of the leading and trailing edges is enough for me.

Photo of 2nd bench, with 57" Granite slab. At 30 dollars for 3 pieces of 1" & 1/8" thick granite you can't go wrong. It would have been nice if they were wider, but if your using the rod method it's not necessary. Amazing what deals are on Kijiji.
