Tuned pipe mounting

looking for pics or tips on the mount for a tuned pipe installation, my first attempt at running a pipe, SV 11  with jet 60.

Go to Tower Hobbies and look at the Dave Brown section. They have 3 different tuned pipe mounts.

OK, you shamed me into it. These are a few pics of the pipe tunnel on my still not ready for prime time Randy Smith "Olympian". First pic is the mount. It is made of laminated basswood and drilled for lightness. Plastic pipe mount is from Dave Brown and secured with the wood screw that is provided. Second is how the landing gear is attached...1/4x1/2 maple motor mount stock drilled for gear, 4/40 blind nuts on the bottom and attached with slow-dry epoxy. Third pic is with power train in place. Fairing over front is just secured with the LG mounting screws and ties in to the cowl. Hope this helps.  8)

Here's a slightly different take on the subject featuring my Brickhaus "Buccaneer". Here the LG is mounted below the pipe. If you look closely you can see the removable "doors" over the gear that slide out, allowing the gear to be removed. The outer fairing is secured with 2/56 screws. I prefer the other method as prop clearance is minimal  due to the recessed gear and it is more work to make but it does look cool.  8)

I usually use the Dave Brown mount. For my profile, I made the mount from plywood with an insulated cover.

Hi Pete, sorry, was unable to get back to you, yes absolutely helped, I ordered the mounts, and the pics were great thank you. also got a few Ideas as to how to finish around the pipe tunnel as well as to adding fuse gear for grass. Your work is very inspiring.

Glad they helped. For other ideas you might want to order Randy Smith's "Aero Products" catalog. It contains downsized plans of many of his designs. They are a good source for ideas and building tips. Lots of good things to spend your modeling dollars on as well.  Good luck with your project.  8)

Oddly enough, I just ordered three of these from Tower yesterday afternoon. I didn't realize the other two pipe mounts were pipe mounts, actually. Until you read the tech info, you'd never know. But everybody seems to use this one, which was the one I ordered.   HIHI%% Steve

I noticed on your Olympian that the Du Bro silicon extension is angled outward slightly  - deliberately?

And the Buccaneer has twin outlets on the pipe - so is that a standard unmodified pipe?

G'Day Chris: Thanks for looking. No, "rubber ducky" pipe end not angled deliberately, just mis-aligned as I just "threw" things together for the photo shoot. Angling outward might not be a bad idea though. Twin outlet pipe is stock. It is what  Dubb Jett sent me when I asked him for a pipe for my .50. Very light and does look good. 8)

And I bet you had Lakes pipes on your deuce coupe ....

Your pics certainly helped ME understand the mounting as I have an Oriental Plus and Legacy on pipe in the works. The OP is done but for trim colors and pipe mount details and the Legacy is in the "idea" stage. Thanks for posting.

The only difference that I use, and see most others doing, from Pete's is using a 4-40 bolt and blind nut to anchor the mount to the base.  It's also a pretty decent idea to use some form of insulation between the pipe and the actual nylon mount.  small pieces of dish rag doubled up works and isn't seen, along with usng small pieces of silicone fuel tubing on the tie wrap, again to help insulate th epipe from vibrations causing wear spots. ;D (really!)

Never really seen any other pipe "mount" in use other than the Dave Brown one.
