Ty,

I have used this technique on a couple of arf's---the biggest problem with them is getting the belly pan to look/fit right.  I have covered two belly pans with silkspan/dope before attaching to covered/doped fuse---just doesn't work well for me.

If you are able to slide the wing into the fuse (like is done on a profile) it should be OK, then you only have to
figure out what, if anything, to do about fillets.

So far, my best approach is to cover the wing before attaching to the fuse and to cover the fuse/tail assembly before attaching the wing---still leaves the fillet problem.  This worked well for a rebuild of my smashed Oriental.

As usual, YMMV.

Now, Ty............ your hands and fingers ain't no where as big as mine!  What's the problem?? LL~ LL~ LL~

The closest I have come to doing what you are doing is to get everything up to the blocking coat before assembly.  Still a LOT of work to do to the fillets and joints once the assemblies are glued together.  But I do understand what you're saying.

I build & finish major parts up to polar gray then put them together. Finish fillets etc.
Then final paint colors.

For me it's easier than working on a whole plane in the paint stand from bare wood up through blocking coats (Polar gray).

One thing I have done is to make a stand out of PVC pipe (padded) that is collapseable.  I can take to to the field and also use it on top of the bench in the shop.  This where I do all my covering of parts and such.  When it's ready for paint it goes on my "Barker" stand.

Ty,

Your plan will work fine. Get the whole paint job on then assemble. If you leave the fillet areas same color as the base color you can treat them and the belly pan as a crash repair. The fillets are strong enough joints to hold the plane together.

Go for it y1
