Title: To Will Hinton on Nason...
Post by: Ward Van Duzer on May 03, 2008, 09:47:56 AM
Will,

I've heard much good stuff on Nason but know little about it. One source says to thin it 50/50 with 3608, and the auto paint store says no thinner required! Store says dust a dry coat on, wait for it to get tacky, follow with a wet coat. ??? Also heard it's potentially dangerous.

What say you?   ???

I think we all need to know more about this stuff....

What can you tell us?

I'm a doper, so I didn't know what Nason was. I Googled and found this pretty interesting, and all positive, as far as I got down through the replies. It's all dangerous, so be careful!  H^^ Steve

Ok Gary,

I've clear top coated 9 stunt planes with Dupont Nason 2 part auto clear.

-Dupont Nason Select Clear #496-00
-Activator 483-78
-Or 483-79 High Temp.

Do not spray this stuff in your home. At the least do it in your garage!

Have good ventalation, cover your skin, use a  good paint mask/filter Minimum.

I spray a light coat, mix up more maybe 5 minutes later (6 or so oz) then the 2nd coat I put it on wet. Should have a big time shine after the 2nd coat.

The reason for the light first coat is 2 heavy coats will want to run.

Spray the bottem of the plane first, then the top so that any over spray is on the bottem.

I make painting fixtures to hold the flaps. elevators, rudder etc.

I tried using thinners etc to make a finish that did not need sanding & rubbing out. Non worked well.

I use it straight. I start wet sanding it out the following day. 1000 then 1500 then rub it out.

The cleaner your spray area & plane the better.

Bugs are your enemy. Q-tips & a steady hand are the best bug fix I have found.

Wait about 2 weeks if you can then put a coat of wax on on.

I've had good luck with Omni and Matrix 2 part catalyzed polyurethane clears. Never tried Nason. I suspect that it's much the same and Patrick's directions are good. I usually wait about 48 hours then sand it out to a matte finish and rub it up. I've had really good luck doing that, but to each his own.

Hey guys, so sorry for the lack of answer from me on this!  I've been really busy with the guitar shop and haven't been on the 'puter for days!  I could easily just say to read the above and it will be the right thing to do, but I want to echo and stress the advice to cover yourself and don't spray this stuff in the home.  I have a HUGE exhaust fan in my shop and always make sure I'm not between the flow to the fan and my spray target as an added precaution.  This stuff is winderful if you follow the rules, but is also dangerous if you don't  I even bought a new mask before using it.  (A kickback from my old Imron days!  Now there's some baaaaaaaad stuff!!)
I'll try to stay more current with SH in the furture,
Will H^^

I would wait longer than 2 weeks to wax it.... if you seal the paint with wax,,, it could still be leaching out  solvents into the air... althoug there arent many solvents in a straight mix catalized clear.. there are some...and if you thin it further.. you could be asking for some solvent popping.. the solvent trying to get out of the paint but the wax seals it in.... to be safe.. wait a couple months.... especially in colder weather...

The manufactors recomend 30 days till you put wax on.

I've found through my limited experience that 2 weeks works.

I've waxed in 1 week. Lucky I guess.

I don't think that two part polyurethane gases off much after catalyzing, but maybe.

I will emphasize what Will said. Be careful with this stuff. Cover up and use a good mask. The stuff is really, really toxic (iso-cyanides) until it's catalyzed.
