Wood and other glue questions
« on: November 14, 2016, 12:19:47 PM »
I more and more rely on Aliphatic resin glues:
Specifically
*White Elmer's Glue All
*Yellow Elmer's Glue Wood Glue Max
*Titebond II
Sig Bond (yellow)
Sig Super Weld (white)
Deluxe Super Phatic (I like this thin CA like glue)

In my adhesives inventory also are:
White Gorilla glue
Testors Green and Brown
Duco
Sigment
New version Ambroid
E6000
Goop
DAP Weldwood contact
Elmer's Rubber glue
3M Super 77
Scotch 77
Various brands thickness CA's
Z-poxy Finishing resin
EZ Lam epoxy resin
5/15/30/90/min epoxies

Several questions:

But first some notes/observations:

Temp controlled shop
Build mostly Balsa and or foam and balsa 35 sized combat and stunt ships for sport flying only
Most aliphatic wood glues are over three years old
The white (dries clear) or yellow (dries yellow) do not seem to matter much with my covering finishing methods
All 4/8/16 oz glues stored in some sort of holder upside down
Some* of my glues are thickening inside the well capped bottle

I wonder if I need to pick just one...and buy a one gallon Jug and trash all these  4 to 16 Oz bottles...Then transfer to smaller bottles for use

How do I decide on ONE?
Or should I?
Are the Sig products just re-bottled Commercial wood glues or do they have some unique quality?

Am I missing any real good glue I should try?

I use, in descending order of frequency;
Original Titebond
Epoxy (30, 15, and 5 minute, but mostly 30 minute) with about 25% micro balloons mixed in.
Various styles of CA
Sigment (rarely)
White Gorilla Glue (rarely, when the expanding feature is advantageous)
I also have seen the Titebond skin over if not used quick enough. I have a gallon that I bought a long time ago, will never do that again. I've been filling my neighbor's Glue-Bot (a great glue bottle, look it up) for him just to use it up.
I have seen the light, and it’s powered by a lipo.

I guess if I pondered my own usage the, ---should I buy a 1 gallon jug? ----is a self evident... no

I have not used up 1 16 Oz, and 2 4 Oz bottles in last 3 years..all about half full

Well one not mentioned is Gorilla Glue Wood Glue. It has been my favorite wood glue. This IS NOT the polyurethane glue similar as you described the white version, which I am also a very big fan of. Last time I went shopping for the Titebond they only had the v3 so bought the Gorilla wood glue instead. I know you were looking for an order, but I saw you missed one.  ;D

I use the three different consistancies of BSI ca's, BSI epoxies, the original Gorilla glue, and Titebond III in my shop for both airplanes and custom guitars.  More variaties than that and I see no advantages.  I keep the ca's in the freezer until I need them for a project, then let them warm up for a day before starting the project, squeeze the Golrilla glue bottle to purge all the air and cap it, and do the same with the Titebond III.  I also buy smaller quantities because of the same issues noted by others here.

Way back when I was doing a lot of wood working as well model plane building I bought a gallon of Elmers Glue all.   It got very thick before I used it all up.  Now I buy the 8 or 16 ounce bottles.  Only get CA in 2 ounce bottle as I don't use that much of it anymore.
