Anyone know of a "How to" for building a cockpit?

And what kind of paints to use on a pilot?

Thanks
Paul

I don't know of a "how to" for building a cockpit. I have got ideas from actual photos....Squadron Signal  publications are just one of many sources depending on the look you are trying to accomplish.....civilian sport, WW II fighter, modern jet, etc.

Paints for pilots are going to depend on the type of material they are made of......Williams Bros. pilots are made of styrene plastic which will allow you to use ether enamel or acrylics.........Testors Model Master, Polly S, Humbrol, etc.  If your pilots are a soft vinyl you need to use acrylics because enamels will not dry...........Testors, Polly S, craft paints, etc.

Just my 2 cents........

Be sure to use a small vacuum and get ALL the dust out of the cockpit. If not, it WILL appear on the inside of the canopy

Ty, if you put a small piece of doule sided tape somewhere in your canopy - this does not happen - you can hide the double sided tape anywhere and it still works

I was always tempted to give the pilot in a cocpit, not fake instruments and a fake throttle, but a minature ez-just and a mini needle valve :##

There was a really good article several SEVERAL years back in Flying Models. I cant remember who wrote it, but it seems it was for a T-38 Talon Stunter maybe?
Pilot figures, there are several good options besides williams bros hard plastic things. I have used pilots from "Petes Pilots" on ebay, very light, and VERy accurate looking figures heres a link to his online store http://stores.ebay.com/Petes-Pilots?_rdc=1 . He has a great selection. There are also some light hollow ones from hmm? now I am drawing a blank,, Hobby Lobby maybe? Nope, just looked, its Hanger 9.
There is another one I have from "Just Pilots" which is a nice figure.

Hi Mark:

The article you referred to was written by Dave Rees, who designed the T-38 Talon stunter. The article about the T-38 appeared in FM in the April 1974 issue of FM, but there was another article written by him that explained the use of thin, embossed sheet plastic panels to construct cockpit details. The results were amazing... and fairly light as well.

I just called the FM offices to find the date of the issue in which that article appeared. The FM crew wasn't in yet, but I will call a bit later and get that information.

On a side note, Dave Rees is one of the most gifted craftsmen aliove in my humble opinion. His CL Stunt models were works of art and his FF Scale models are just simply magnificent. Dave is a long time friend and I'm sad to report that he is very ill these days. Dave is a gentle, caring and generous man, and I'm asking here for everyone's thoughts and prayers for him.

Well, my Hurricane canopy was invaded by a spider!  The critter is long gone, but the web is still in there. I'm wondering if I can drill a 1/8" hole somewhere and insert tubing through the hole and blow in there with the air compressor?  Or maybe working a copper wire through the hole and collect webs?

Or maybe rename the plane something along the Spiderman theme?

Floyd,AMEN,, And you live on the good side of the state!

Bob,
thanks for the follow up on the article, The one using thin sheets of plastic was pretty darn impressive. I plan on going that path once I am fairly confident I have reached a point my plane will last more than part of a season lol.
Sorry to hear that Mr. Rees is not feeling well. My thoughts to him , his family, and his friends.
