Title: thinning epoxy
Post by: t michael jennings on February 13, 2008, 06:46:40 PM
Many times epoxy is used to fuel proof the engine compartment.

What is the best fluid to thin 5 minute and 30 minute epoxy.

     1. denatured alcohol

     2. lacquer thinner

     3. acetone

I prefer Z-Poxy straight up!  But if not, I use acetone and lacquer thinner both, which ever one my hand grabs.  Never tried the denatured alcohol.

The alchy works fine, but it takes very little to do the job.  I, too, prefer the Z-Poxy staright up.  I apply it with a brush and then wipe it back off with a paper towel.  I check it after curting and sometimes feel the need to repeat the process, but usually don't have to.
Blessings,
Will

I acid brush it on and use a heat gun to thin it out (Z-Poxy).  Uses a lot less that way and soaks into the wood very nicely.

I ran across this about three years ago... pretty good stuff regarding thinning epoxy.

I don't thin it. At least not directly. I heat it. Heat up the components before mixing and it paints on like water. Works for me.

when you thin 6 minute or even 30 minute epoxy doesnt that make it start to set and go sticky rather fast I know if I want epoxy to dry fast I hold the item in front of a heat source to get it to set faster??

This is a very good reference.  Thanks, Dick

I use the heat gun method. Paint it on, heat it up the firewall area, let the hot drops move around and seep into the grain, then let it drip off. It will then setup faster.
