Title: T-Bolt Details condensed (photo's)
Post by: RC Storick on August 21, 2006, 05:44:20 PM
I had decided a while back to build another Thunder Bolt. Today I started on the fuselage. This is 1 days progress. Fuse and stab and elevator is almost complete. I find this plane easy to build as I have all the jig's,molds and fixtures already made. So in about 2 weeks I will have the basic airframe done and start finishing. I will give a detailed finish step by step on this plane.

I have the wing half's already done. I have a new S6B ready to put together as well. I know everyone thought I was sleeping but guess what? "I" wasn't!

Here is a shot of the airframe. It weighs 19.5 oz as it sits here. I think I can complete it under 25 oz. Top and bottom and rudder. If is goes more than 28oz it will be scrap.

Molding to start tomorrow night.

Is anybody out there going to build this plane now that the plans are out? I am thinking of selling skins.

Are you going to do anything different on this one from the others.? I noticed in another thread you said this wasnt your plane of choice.  What will you do this time to make it so?

In response to message #0

There have been allot of replies to this thread. I have experience with this airplane. It will take an engine that is light and can swing a big prop. Low end torque or a high rev big horsepower engine. Either way the plane must be built light! I had a .61 on a pipe in the first one and yes it flew OK however with a .75 if flies much better! The frontal area is the killer. I am building the third one fitted for the .75 and I will try for the weight of a .40 size airplane. mid 50tys My S6B same basic airframe except more streemline flies great at 57 oz. I was asked by Jim Lynch how I got it that light? Answer "stand closer to the sandpaper"

Sparky,

I agree completely. I've been ruthless in sanding filler and such on the new plane I'm working on. Spent more time sanding that plane than the last three. 626 square inches and weighed ~42oz ready to fly prior to putting on the first coat of dope on the bare airframe. I've been determined that it not go over 50oz.

Hi Sparky,

I am very impressed with the weight you can build this model.

We will need to make the wing removable in other to bring it on the plane.

Would you be interested in making a kit ?

With removable wings of course ;D

Thanks for the compliment but I am not interested in building for others any longer. I have built many planes for other FAI fliers but I no Longer have the time to do so. I was offered BIG money to build this plane for another person and I have turned it down as well.

This forum and building for my self take up too much of my time already.

Hey  Sparky,

How about a P-47N with the long ventral fin and squared off wingtips? Actually..................  Billy's first P-47 "Geo Bolt" was a red racing "N" with the squared off tips.  He *might* have won the Concours at the '95 (??) Nats with it.  Red #7, very sharp. AFAIK, it was said to Billy that it didn't "present" well, and I don't think he flew it again.

Post by: RC Storick on October 09, 2006, 06:41:37 PM
Here are a couple of shots of T-Bolt#3. As you see it here it weighs 20 oz. I think with the top and bottom molded skins, rudder, canopy and pilot it will come in under 25 oz. This is a good weight for this size airframe. This build has taken considerably longer than the others. Looking for the front row this year of coarse it might be hard with 40 other T-Bolts there. SH^

A "Checkertail Clan" ship is the ticket!  That is an awesome paint scheme.

The other one is Col. Francis Gabreski's plane (camo) is another excellent choice!

Title: Sneak peak at the new T-Bolt
Post by: RC Storick on October 16, 2006, 07:00:39 PM
Here are a few shots of what I have been up to. The cowl on this one took two days. Jim Lynch gave me a guide at the last NATS on how and what they were looking for for the front row. Perfect fits and shape are in the cards for this bird. I was going to make a remote glow starter but it weighs 14 grams. Too much extra weight IMHO. But the fuel line is hidden in the cowl opening and the needle valve will not show either.Hidden mounting hardware. Its been a pain but I hope it will pay off.

Last shot is one of the Brazilians T-Bolts. I hope they used glue this year. At last years NATS I was almost hit with a flying engine on one occasion and on the other occasion I was almost his with a whole plane in the face.

It's coming along great! But with all the competition of P-47s this year I can't let all the tricks out of the bag, at least not till its done. Lets just say it will be twice as good as the #2 bolt I flew in the past years. While the Senta Pua team will have more scale like finishes with the flat olive drab I have chosen to do a high gloss silver-gray with bright squadron colored trim.

I said no Razorback. I like the bubble better and I need to build for me,sorry. The plane in question is one of the last planes Tom Warden built before he passed on the the flying circle in the sky. I keep it as a memory of him. I have never flown it and probibly will not ever fly it. It has a GMA ST-G21.46 in it. I might use the engine in something someday.

Title: Cowl mounting (photos)
Post by: RC Storick on October 22, 2006, 11:25:32 AM
I was asked on SSW about how did I mount the cowl. I will no longer answer those types of questions other than here at the Hangar.

So first off I bent the gear and installed them. Then I weighed one of my other T-bolts with out the engine. This airframe stand at 814 grams (28.71) ( missed my target weight for this stage by .71) but as close as I can figure I have 11.5 finish weight room. If I use it all it should be a spectacular finish. But you know me I wont! That is so I can come out at the same weight as number one T-Bolt. However I want it lighter so I am looking for a 8 oz finish. That will be a feet in its self as the airframe is so big but I am gonna try!

Cowl mounting pictures are self explanatory.

Yes the cool factor would be there but this is not scale. The reason for no vents is I do not want to compromise the structure in the aft fuselage. The guns would be cool except the would probably get bent up. So I will leave no chance of this an leave them off.

EDIT: I do not know how I ever finished planes before getting this Byron Barker paint stand. It is a true joy to work with. I can also see how my finishes will come out better using this product. I will not have any more dings in the finish before even getting to the field for the first flight

I can stand in one spot and turn the plane over at will. Its great!

Whats those "BOBOs" on the fuse under the veil?

Of what Bo-Boo's do you speak of? If you mean the light colored spots, those are high spots that are being exposed after block sanding. I go to Walgreen's drug store and buy fingernail files by the dozen. They are about 1.25 wide and 9 inch's long of different grits. I use the to block sand the round shape in the fuse. If I have a low spot I lay another piece of CF vial down with clear dope then sand to shape. I feel the that vial is lighter than filler. After I get all the woodwork straight and filled with clear I will ad one coat of Zinc Striate primer (sprayed on) to the airframe and sand it all off. One coat of base color and then trim and clear.

Hi Robert,

I see you're going to spray on a coat of ZS.  What happened to the auto primer?  Is the zinc sterate going to come out lighter or do you feel it fills better?

Thanks,
Bill <><
Title: Re: T-Bolt Photo
Post by: RC Storick on October 29, 2006, 08:07:16 AM

Hi Sparky,

I have used Randy's ZS many many times.  It IS light, sand without effort, and fills great.   It isn't as "convienient" as the spray can primer, but it's like I told you about using an airbrush to paint the whole plane!  Takes more time is all, but it WILL be lighter......

The plane will be gorgeous when you're done.  y1

I'm trying to finish up all the other stuff in the shop so that I can get to work on that Razorback!  All I got is a PA .61, but I will keep it light enough that the .61 will pull it fine.  ;D

I thought zinc sterate was a metal primer.  Ive seen it used on auto parts and on aircraft to hold down corrosion.

EDIT...*** had some brain lock...I'm thinking of zinc chromate.

What are the properties of zinc sterate and what does it do for balsa?

I've been following your build threads for a while and like your relatively simple and light finishing process.  I just ordered some ZS as I wanted to give it a try and was wondering if you spray it on or brush it on over the polyspan.  Also, what grit do you use for sanding the primer off the polyspan?

Thanks

Mix like the instructions say. Then thin 50/50 and spray. I use 320 then 400 before color.

That one is much more "Scale" looking than before for some reason.  Everything looks great so far.

I have decoded that mine will be a turtle deck and painted up as the "Little Chief".  It has a large profile of an Indian Chief in full head dress on the cowl with red nose ring and rudder, O/D over gray.

BTW: any progress on my shells?   **)

The wood has some power in it (a hard spot) After looking at them I will finish them with covering and dope and see how it takes a set. If still warped I will steam them. If all else fails I will make a new set. Better now than later.

Progress is slow as I am trying to get it right. The emblems are on and I am getting ready to spray the lightning bolt on the side. The bolt will have a 1/16 black out line around it. Checkerboard on the nose underneath the bolt. Silver gray LE. Red stripes rudder and elevator. Checkerboard tips.

I am going to do twice the detail as the number 2 bolt. So it will take me all winter I think to complete this plane.

On this plane I decided to paint all the important lines instead of using INK. While INK is faster I think the painted line will yield a more professional look You tell me.

I ordered the stencils from Tank's Hangar to make it more realistic. Still everything so far is painted on and not inked. The ink will be the last step. On the last ones I used decals instead of painting the general aircraft nomenclature.

Here's a P-47 Govt. Training link http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6497955441338098345 it is 25 min long and starts out with the typical WW2 Woman promotion. Really an interesting film.

I was asked how I get the nice clean lines around the fillet area. I use to Ink them by making a template but I have found I can tape them off nicely. If you don't like how it looks just re-tape as desired. So the method of choice on the model is tape. I will go to the pen soon.

Every line you see here has been painted on. The ink will come last.

When I was at the 04 worlds and I looked at Billy's plane, the only thing I said to him about his plane was that it was the nicest ink job I had ever seen. I now know how he did it. Too Kewl!!!

If Rembrandt would have built model airplanes I bet it would have looked just like that. You are not seriously considering flying that are you.

Bob, That pilot looks a little apprehensive. Has he flown one of your planes before? Maybe you need to give him a little drink before the test flight to calm him down.

Oh yes -----fantastic details.  Hope I get the opportunity to take some pictures of it next summer.

Being a good mechanic is not remembering the specs on every thing you work on but know how to use the resources available to you.

Great advice, Bob. That applies to not only model airplane or mechanic work but to every endeavor in life. Anybody that ever excels at anything has to use that method.

I for one, will never get tired of seeing the pictures.

It's been said before but that is one "OUTSTANDING PIECE OF WORK".  Watching that airplane progress has been a real incentive.

  Hi Robert,

Have you used a reference of some sort as to the location of your panel lines etc or are you just making it up as you are going along?

Either way it certainly looks outstanding! Wish it were mine! ;D ;D ;D ;

Cheers, Rob.

I am using a plastic scale model and printed material to reference the panel lines and nomenclature, but because its not quite to scale some of the lines have to be moved. But it is a close to scale as I can make it.

I think I'm going to throw in the towel and give up modeling. It used to be I thought I had a chance of matching and even surpassing what the other fellows could do. Now looking at Sparky's plane I feel that I've been livimg in a fantasy world. I'm just not good enough. I think I'll try my hand at fingerpainting. GOODBYE ALL............................................

Back in the late 60tys and early 70tys everything was a secrete. How to prep wood, how to cover ,paint etc.. I do not post theses picture to discourage anyone! I post them to inspire people. The drive and motivation that I have has been installed by people Like Billy Werwage, Al Rabe, Tom Warden ,Bob Hunt and a host of other modelers.

I watch every tape and read ever how to article I can get my hands on. Some are good some are bad. I just have learned how to sift out the ones that will work for me. While a keen eye and steady hands helps in building models it is not necessary to get the joy and pride out of constructing a working model. Giving birth to a creation that is an expression of your true self. Never settle for second best. If you strive for perfection  (while unachievable) will yield a outstanding model.

I just try to copy what others have done and follow their guide lines. This has been easer than trying to re-invent the wheel. All the math and calculations in the world will not help you if you don't have and inner drive for success.

Beautiful indeed.. My other hobby is Amateur Radio. The man who introduced me to that was Glenn Haines. He passed away a few years ago and I still miss him. He flew a P-47C "Razorback" over the skies of Europe during WWII.. He knew Robert Johnson, also a P-47C pilot. Robert was the leading American ace of WWII (28 confirmed kills) when he returned from the European Theater in 1944.

Some WWII Flyboys will argue that the P-47 was the best fighter plane built for the war effort. It's detractors considered it too overweight. It was heavily armed with four .50 cal machine guns that could launch 13 lbs. of lead every second at it's target. Using it's 2000 plus hp Pratt & Whitney Radial engine, it could lug 2000 lbs. of bombs into the air.  It's extremely high kill ratio was impressive. You picked a good one, Robert...

If you'd like to hear some interesting stories about the Razorback, contact me. I spent hours with Glenn listening to his "warstories"..

Nick aka
Windwalker

[EDIT] I left out 3 inportant words in this post. I should have said "It was heavily armed with four .50 cal machine guns IN EACH WING"

Will I ever do anything perfect?             NO

Great shots...Bob, you really nailed the looks on this model

Attached is a photo of Ted Delo who taught me so much about professional model making.
Funny thing is...I thought I knew so much about building models...until after the first day of working with Ted at the Boeing Wind tunnel model shop.
Ted was the first model maker that I was assigned to work with on our my first flutter model.
He was a celebrated WW2 ACE and shared so many great stories with all of us wind-tunnel rats.
Gads----he would have loved your beautiful JUG!

but if you make the rest of the stealty like the flap judges will hae a hard time seeing your square corners.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Sparky,
I just cruised through this thread from post # 1. I didn't do too much reading. Mostly I looked at the pictures. And I learned a couple things along the way that I will use on my own projects.
You've set the bar mighty high with this airplane man! I haven't seen what all the other stunt guys will be bringing to the circle this next season but they're going to need to bring some serious swag if they want to top this model. The way I see it, your plane will be on the front row and best of show everywhere you take it.
You've done something here with this paint and detail that all the rest of us will probably only aspire to.
I'm inspired. Now that I've seen your work I'm going to try on each model to make it better than the last.
