Robert,
This is really phenomenal work.  What I like, is that you are focusing on one plane and really getting it down.  This is what guitar players do.  It's called "wood shedding".

Sparky, my man!

That one is much more "Scale" looking than before for some reason.  Everything looks great so far.

I have decoded that mine will be a turtle deck and painted up as the "Little Chief".  It has a large profile of an Indian Chief in full head dress on the cowl with red nose ring and rudder, O/D over gray.

BTW: any progress on my shells?   **)

Keep it up!

Sparky: You said you didn't paint the flaps because of a warp and were going to cut new ones. Is it less hassle to cut new ones than to try to get the warp out ? or is getting a warp out impossible because they are covered  ?

The wood has some power in it (a hard spot) After looking at them I will finish them with covering and dope and see how it takes a set. If still warped I will steam them. If all else fails I will make a new set. Better now than later.

Lightning Bolt (Photo)Up-date
« Reply #110 on: November 07, 2006, 09:53:22 PM »
Progress is slow as I am trying to get it right. The emblems are on and I am getting ready to spray the lightning bolt on the side. The bolt will have a 1/16 black out line around it. Checkerboard on the nose underneath the bolt. Silver gray LE. Red stripes rudder and elevator. Checkerboard tips.

I am going to do twice the detail as the number 2 bolt. So it will take me all winter I think to complete this plane.

Sparky,

I don't recognize these markings, Is this scheme an actual copy of a wartime P-47 scheme? BTW, Invasion stripes on the bottom would be cool too.

It is not a real paint scheme. It is however a combination of many paint scheme I have seen. Invasion stripes on the bottom "Yes" just like my T-Bolt #2

On this plane I decided to paint all the important lines instead of using INK. While INK is faster I think the painted line will yield a more professional look You tell me.

I ordered the stencils from Tank's Hangar to make it more realistic. Still everything so far is painted on and not inked. The ink will be the last step. On the last ones I used decals instead of painting the general aircraft nomenclature.

Here's a P-47 Govt. Training link it is 25 min long and starts out with the typical WW2 Woman promotion. Really an interesting film.

Man this piddling around with the paint job is driving me crazy! I have spent the last week 8 -10 hrs a day working on just paint and it is not even close to being done yet. I know I have all winter but this is ridiculous. Coming out close but still not perfect (damn close) but who's counting.

I am posting this picture here because of the condensed version of this thread. I will be doing a complete finishing section on the TIPS section of Stunt Hangar from the main page. Stay tuned.

All the techniques I use can be used easily on any airplane. Just try to remember that there is no easy finish. It's all elbow grease and desire!

How I do it (photo's)
« Reply #136 on: November 14, 2006, 04:46:41 PM »
I was asked how I get the nice clean lines around the fillet area. I use to Ink them by making a template but I have found I can tape them off nicely. If you don't like how it looks just re-tape as desired. So the method of choice on the model is tape. I will go to the pen soon.

Every line you see here has been painted on. The ink will come last.

When I was at the 04 worlds and I looked at Billy's plane, the only thing I said to him about his plane was that it was the nicest ink job I had ever seen. I now know how he did it. Too Kewl!!!

How do you get the 2 pieces of tape spaced evenly for the line to look right throughout? ??? ???

Just 3 more pictures. Progress is still slow. I still need to paint the flaps and I am waiting on stencils from Tank's Hangar. More checks on ele and rudder along with the invasion stripes on the bottom and red trim on the tail. But its a winner!

Robert, you are simply an artist.  It's disgusting...no single person should have so much talent. Just look at those rivet heads.

Thanks Ray. I need to tell all of you it does take some artistic talent but the thing that helps me most is" USE THE RIGHT TOOLS". Anyone can do anything if you follow the directions to the letter. Trust me on this!!

Being a good mechanic is not remembering the specs on every thing you work on but know how to use the resources available to you. One of the many things my dad taught me. Thats the biggest reason I started the forum. Pass it on!
