Any body know the best material to make stencils out of ? I'm just looking to put my A.M.A number on the wing
-
I like self adhesive frisket material. Very little clear dope to seal the edges. Then it peels right off, but always use a heat gun to warm it up. This goes for almost any type of tape, stencil, etc. FWIW H^^
Ty thanks for the advice but i have no clue what ''frisket'' material is LOL. Could you explain a little?
TIA

ATGF = Always Try Google First
Try googling "Frisket Paper" and you'll get about 11,000 "hits" including definitions, examples and prices.

Hi Steve,
I painted my new ship using shelf paper from Wal-Mart. I got the idea from Joe Adamusko who told me Bob Lampione showed him this method 20 years ago. I used the white shelf paper with the 1/2" squares on the backside. The only problem I had was some glue residue left behind, but it cleaned up easily with prep-sol.
There is actually a material called frisket paper, but contact paper, shelf paper......... are all very similar and the names are swapped around by many people.

Not to dispute what you are saying Mike, I certainly have used shelf paper, I have also used high quality tracing paper with rubber cement. The best thing about Frisket paper is that it is SO much easier to cut cleanly with a light touch. It is consistant and reliable. Again use what works for you, but for me, the real deal is Frisket paper, I use the stuff I get from Spokane Art Supply (I think they have a web site ) its in a roll, I use a sharp #11 blade and you basically just have to drag the blade over it using the weight of the knife to cut it. It has never reacted with any paint I use over it.
FWIW, I do some custom airbrush on helmets bikes and cars.
I have all my AMA numbers cut by the local shop on Gerber Mask.

Since I don't have a local source for Frisket, I stole some of my wife's clear shelving vinyl. Worked like a charm. I have heard horror stories about the paper pulling up paint but I didn't have the probelm with whatever particular brand this stuff is.
Hey, Mark! I didn't know anyone else had used parchment and rubber cement! LOL!!

We've been using R-G Graphix low tack vinyl stencils, work great with dope. Ralph Geese offers thousands of fonts, easy to use, very fair prices. I imagine other graphics outfits can do about the same type of work...Ralph is really easy to work with!

Any one have a link to R-G Graphixs ?

Steve,
DFG. (Don't Forget Google) This was the third hit in a Google search:
http://www.rg-graphix.com/home.htm
I assume that is the site referred to. If not, Google again, and look for it.
It looks like they do some pretty exciting work.
Cheers.

Steve, if you have a LHS or craft store that sell Badger airbrushes and supplies they should have the friskit paper.
It is available in....I believe 8x11 sheets and 15ft rolls.

Can someone give a basic how to 101 step process from beginning to end on how to apply frisket numbers and other graphic media to our planes surfaces?
-
Greg, I can but not tonight, its bedtime, and 5;15 comes way early

Thanks Mark.

Perhaps the most important thing in working with masking, frisket, decals and the like is a ample supply of new razoe and exacto blades. Even if it is sharp enough to slice balsa it is not sharp enough. As soon as you feel the balde start to drag it is time to teplace it. THIS WILL ELIMINATE 80% of all screwups with masking and frisket.
As an alterbative see if your design can make use of decal sheets that can be created using your printer and computer, or a design that can be printed out at kinkos on a color laser printer. Just remember that these printers can not print white. This is not a problem if your base color coat is white as it will show through in the proper places. But if your plane is other than white, the underlying color will show through in those areas on the printed decal that is supposed to be white, which in certain cases may be OK anyway.
