Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone has thinned epoxy glue with rubbing alcohol and sprayed it in this form? I have an old miller spray rig with the suction type cups and tried spraying the epoxy with this set up. It sprayed a real nice coat, sort of an amber color, nice an shinny. I guess the weigh factor is what you would have to concider. Just another dumb question, years ago used to use glass cloth with liquid polyester solution. With a lite coat seems to seal the wood with a nice finish. Would appreciate any in put, thank you Gary

Be real careful spraying that stuff! Wear at least a carbon respirator and wear seriously consider a hasmat suit. Epoxy's very easily generate allergic reactions with exposure and spraying it could really be an issue. You have lots or airborne with that. The number of folks who have become allergic to epoxies in 100% scale homebuilding is the reason there are so many partially done builds on the market and now so few epoxy kits marketed any more. It can probably be done safely with appropriate precautions, but just be careful.

Thank you Bob, you're correct, it can be very dangerous to use. Be sure you have the correct equipment to protect yourself. Thank you for your input, Gary

My flying buddy cannot even sand cured epoxy anymore! Anywhere the dust gets on him creates a NASTY rash!

Yeah, I sprayed alcohol thinned epoxy on my Bearcat a few years ago. It worked, but was hard to avoid runs and was obviously nasty, even when wearing a mask. I think there are better options.

DO NOT do it!!!!
It will kill you. If you wanna know the easy way, roll it on
with a cheap foam roller, a little one. Get the long ones at
the store and cut to size. Then, use a throwaway foam
brush and tip it off. A little practice and it comes out like
glass. Get some throwaway rubber gloves and wear em.
Poxy- Once you get to much in your system/body, a weird thing
happens. You get "sensitized" and any further exposer makes you
really sick. Like in, having the flu sick, for a week.
Hey, just be cautious and look out for yourself when you use
chemical based stuff.

1 more thing. Rubbing alchohol is 10% water. Use lac. thinner.

Shellac thinner, also from the paint department, is pure alcohol, or at least no water. Personally, I think it affects the epoxy less. Doesn't smell as good, tho. :X Steve

There is an epoxy manufacturers web site, I believe West Systems, that recommends NEVER thinning epoxy due to the reduction in physical properties caused by thinning of the resin. If a more viscous mix is needed, their recommendation is to lightly heat the mix and applies only to laminating. Heating although it thins the mix also accelerates the cure. Nowhere have I seen any recommendations to about spraying it. I would avoid spraying due to the health problems.
I also have a friend who can no longer handle epoxy due to the skin irriation problem.
