Title: Simi Chrome Aluminum Polish
Post by: Oregon_Flyer on June 27, 2006, 08:32:13 PM
I am wondering if there is a product out there that replaces simi-chrome for ease of polishing aluminum to a brilliant almost chrome finish.  I would like to shine up my aluminum gear and prop spinners.

Jeweler's rouge is the cat's meow for polishing aluminum.  Use it with a buffing wheel.  Cheap and fast!

I use Gary's technique.  I have two sets of buffing wheels, and four compounds.  One set of wheels is a pair of stiched ones, and the other is a pair of unstiched.  I use a pair of each.  Be careful around the edges!  They can grab a corner real quick.  y1

Depending on how bad a shape the part is in, makes the decision as to which compound to start with.  Sometimes it's just the white (finest) or I may have to start with the red (next in line).  Then clean with an aluminum safe cleaner to remove the residue.

On a badly scratched or discolored part, I may start withthe black (coarsest) or brown.  Then follow up to the white.  They sparkle like glass!

Scott Riese can take care of that for you.  There are alot of ways to polish you're gear. Rubbing or Polishing compound will take some time. 600-1200 wet..to long. 180 grt-800grt and then steep the polishing compounds as I do for the mufflers.....bingo....10 mins or less.  n~
Protecting the finish is the key

Hey SQ-8's

Mighta known the go to guy would have me covered and you are right about protecting the finish.  Simichrome was a paste that we used on the aluminum on our bikes to keep it looking sharp.  I don't know what all was in it but with almost no effort it made it shine and kept it from oxidizing.  The simichrome I am referring to is by Happich and I think it is from the UK.  I will email Mr. Bill Davidson and see if he can point me to the right person in the HD group that knows about this stuff and then post it here for those that might be interested.

Peabody,

Yep, we strayed a bit as my original question was is there a product out there better than simichrome by happich.  Obviously each builder has a favorite method but I was asking for a replacement for it from someone who had used simichrome.  My thanks go out to all those "been there" members sharing what works for them.

I have  here  and  use  Simi chrome. the product is  excellent, however  Mothers  mag and  alum polish works for  me  just as  well. it takes  no time  to make  a  Spinner  shine like a  car bumper

When I was in the motorbike business, a combo pack of Simichrome and Blu-Away was the hot set-up for all those that watched their single wall pipes turn blue....

Wenhams polish is a similar product...sold at county fairs and bike rallies where hucksters gather...I love the pitch.

Gorhams silver polish works well on spinners as well....Winfred uses it....
