Title: Side mounted pipes
Post by: Ken Culbertson on May 01, 2018, 07:49:31 AM
I have seen examples of pipes on side exhaust engines mounted so that the pipe is on the bottom by rotating the mount 45 degrees.  I cannot find anything searching to shed light on this practice.  Will it work or should it be avoided?

No personal experience of that but I have a feeling that it might be actually better than classic setup (rear exhaust/cylinder down.) There are certain details in engine construction that work better in that kind of setup.
Of course, some may find it not so pretty.

Ken,

This is exactly what we did with our R/C pattern ships. All of us did it this way. Well most of us, some had the pipe inside the fuse.

Pipe exposed was easy to service.

Be interesting to see this in CL.

One of my early pattern ships with a side mounted pipe.

Couldn't find the larger photo. I think I wore it out.  LL~

The traditional engine mounting crutch would have to be changed -- the way it's done now it's a really light and effective way to transfer engine forces to the fuselage.  It may be a challenge to get something that's as good without going up much in weight.

And the cowling will be different.

As an alternative, you could make a header that comes off the engine and wraps around to the back, to use a 'normal' inverted engine mount and a 'normal' fuse-bottom pipe with a side exhaust.  Of course, you'd have to find the header.

Thanks, you have confirmed that it will work.  I really like that control system. Under flap hurts the rounds, over flap hurts the corners.  You seem to have found a way to optimize both.  I tried to do something similar back in the late 60's when I was a machinist but I could never get rid of the flutter in the flaps and gave up.  The way you have placed the flap horn seems to solve that.  The only thing that is not clear in the photos is how you made the flap connection.  I can see it picking up slop pretty fast.  It looks like a roller of some sort.

It is 10mm ball bearing, works vell, also after many years of lying does not build free play.

We have politicians here that do the same thing!  Thank you again, the pictures tell me everything I need to know!
