Title: Rods for wing jig
Post by: brucefinley on June 02, 2006, 09:53:26 AM
I am starting my RSM Tony and want to use a wing jig. The ribs have a 3/16 hole.  What would be the best source for this size rod?  K&N music wire?  Brass or alum tube?  Any ideas?

Bruce,

I think that there are a lot of guys that use the aluminum arrow shaft blanks to get the job done as well.  Maybe you will get a post from one of them.  Google it or look in the yellow pages under archery supplies maybe??

Sorry Bruce ,

I forgot to mention that "drill rod" works just fine .
Do a Google search for  drill rod .
You should find a bunch of places that sell the stuff

Unless Eric changed the jig holes are 5/32. I just use music wire 4pcs. You can use a block of wood with 5/32nd holes drilled to match the rib holes. It also serves as a center support brace.

I double checked it, Lee and you are right!  I'll look for some 5/32 rod.  Thanks

The advantage of using carbon fibre rod vs the alternatives is that its stiff and light.  No center supports are required to prevent sagging.  If you're going to be shimming your jig rods, why bother with the jig at all?

The carbon rods shouldn't be hard to find at a hobby shop.  The local shop has a midwest rack right next to the balsa.

Don't assume all CF rods are straight.  I just looked at the last one in my stash from Central Hobbies and it is slightly bowed--eyeballing it.  Best to check all for straightness.............

I found a local supplier of aluminum tubing in our phone book. He even cut the tubing to the correct length for me. He had all sizes.

I was at True Value Hardware today to look for a 3/8" rod to taper flaps with. They had it and also to my supprise 3/8" alum. rod 6' length for 6.99 ea. and they were straight. I have several kits that have the 3/8" jig holes so I got them. I got accetone, rod for tapering and jig rods for 25.00 and I did't forget anything. How'd I do that.

I believe you should go with carbon fiber tubes rather than rods. Tubes are not only lighter but also stiffer.

Arrow shafts are very cheap. Join in the center with a piece of tubing.1/4" and 5/16"
Even cheaper and 50" long are electric pence posts at Tractor Supply. 5/16" and 3/8"
I always join them in the center as it is easier to remove them.

The problem with using carbon fiber for a jig is the carbon fiber has an excellent affinity for glue, particularly CA, but other glues stick extremely well.  This means when it is time to REMOVE said carbon fiber a single errant drop of glue means that at least one rib will break, probably more.

Use drill rod.  A little candle wax rubbed on before threading the ribs on means most glue won't even stick.

Speedymetals is reasonably priced.
