Removeable flaps
« on: September 30, 2006, 04:07:43 PM »
At one of our Mt. Joy flying sessions Crist R. showed me how he uses 1 pc of .025??  wire to connect the hinges on each wing panel. I forget how this was secured to the wing and is the horn wire then held in only by the horn bearing? and the hinges being connected?? Removeable flaps is something I haven't done but want to do with my planes from now on.   Thanks

Lee,
The flap or elevator horn is held in place using a brass tube and glued into the fuselage.  the flpas or elevator has a brass tube to accept the horn wire.  Use Klett hinges and .025 wire.  Bend the end of the wire 90 degrees and use a SIG 1/32 eyelet in the TE.  Insert the 90 degree bend into the eyelet to secure the wire.

Hi Crist, et al.,

And this method, using Klett hinges, will no longer be an option when current stocks are used up. I called the Klett Plastics factory in Ft. Worth on Thursday, Sept. 28, , and got the following (somewhat paraphrased) message, "Thank you for calling. Due to the death of the owner, Klett Plastics has closed its doors, and will no longer be taking orders".

I had called to order a bunch, as the Klett's were the only nylon hinge I've ever used successfully. I suppose I could cut the head off the pin of a DuBro hinge . . .

(Too many irons; not enough fire)

Crist: I know how to recess the hinges but with the wire going the full length of the flap or elevator how does the wire pass through the wood between the hinges???

It doesn't.  It stays in between the TE of the wing and the LE of the flap.

Here's a picture of my Harbinger at the wing tip.  You canb see the eyelet, hinge pockets and the hinge wire.

It appears that this method leaves quite a gap along the hinge line.  Do you seal it with tape, or does the pin itself close the gap enough to suffice?     Glen
