I'm Losin' It!
« on: October 04, 2010, 07:57:17 PM »
Somewhere on this board (I think) I was in a discussion about building boards and aluminum jigs.  Some kind modeler provided a link to photos of his jig board, with an explanation as to the layout of the holes and the particulars on the melamine board itself.  I can't find it!  It may be on SS, but I don't remember.  I post here much more often than on SS.  Hopefully, someone might be able to help find it.  Thanks in advance.

Dick,
You are not losing it.  There was a thread over on SSW that Mike Griffin started about passing along tips.  In that thread he had posted some information that I had sent along to him, but was not able to recover on the board and the dimensions.  Maybe he can check in here and repost that information.  If he does not in the next couple of days, I will dig back through my stuff and see if I have the pictures and might be able to rewrite the text.

Below is the email that I originally sent to Mike.

Mike,
Attached you will find some pictures that I took and a PDF of the basic hole layout.  Basically what I did was start with a piece of melamine shelf that was 15"wide and 72" long and cut the length to 54".  Then I made a centerline lengthwise and widthwise.  From the center of the length (the point 27" from either end) I started making lines across the width every 3 inches except for the last one which was 2 1/2".  On each of the lines I bored a hole (1/4" I think) first at 3/4" from the lengthwise centerline (the line 7 1/2 inches from either edge) and then every 2" from there.  The PDF file should show this fairly well.

While this is not fully optimized, it does allow for the uprights to move to just about any area across the width of the board.  You may need to reverse the direction of the uprights to acheive this.

On the bottom I ran a good cut piece of 1x2 that was originally 8' long and then cut in half.  This gives full support to 48" of the total 54" which I think is plenty.  These are both screwed in at 2 inches from both edges leaving 3 inches of gap on either end.  To keep things from sagging or warping, I screwed in an eyebolt on the end and hang the unit when not in use.

I suppose that additional lines could be drawn on the board to improve references if desired and I may do that as I start using it more.

Please let me know if you need any clarification on my layout.  Any suggestions are also welcome.

Do you use this jig for the wing and the fuselage? Where did you get the uprights and your other brackets?

Those are the wing jigs.  The fuselage jigs are different.  Both jig sets are available through Control Line Central and are very high quality, precision made parts.  I bought both jig sets plus the optional V-blocks for the wing jig.
