Here's a pic of where I am so far. More trim to put on and I broke down and ordered more iron on covering (after finally figuring out what it was I had). Have to wait for Tower to get it here.

Mark,

I dont' know. I've been afraid to look. I actually went kinda heavy on the paint on the tail hoping too offset some of the balance issues.

I'm heading out shortly to paint on the next (and last) trim color. Then I can get some clear on it and prep for the fabulous iron on covering (though I will have to wait for that until the new covering gets here).

Boot,

Both  ;D

It's auto toners with a dope binder. I shot the trim on tonight and of course, since it's black, I had a lot of problems with flash. Hopefully, I can card it off tomorrow and do a bit of touch up (man, why do I do these thin stipes?).

Looks pretty cool, though.

The colors are Ford Performance Red, a white I mixed up myself (with a touch of red and black in it) and GM Screaming Yellow with the pain in the butt black trim. sigh...

What did you order from Tower Randy. After all these years I think they've really changed Monokote.I did my little Shoestring in white Mono and the shrinkage was terrible, it was like it had a grain and would shrink more in one direction them the other. It also felt heavier.

Randy,

Well, initially, I had about a half roll of transparent yellow that I'm had on the shelf for a very long time. Maybe 15 years. After messing around for awhile, I decided that I liked it. I thought is Monokote so I ordered some transparent yellow Monokote from Tower. It came and it's not even remotely the same. After doing a bit of research, I think what I had was Coverite Red Baron transparent yellow. It's a bit more orangey that the Monokote. That's on the way now (hope to get it today or Monday).

The paint on the fuse is done except for topcoat of clear. I may try shooting the whole plane with a coat of catalyzed polyurethane. Haven't decided on that yet. I plan to start cover the stab and finish up covering the control surfaces today (I have enough of the old stuff left for that). With luck, I'll get the Coverite today. That would be cool. I could finish this thing up.

It actually look kinda cool overall ... in a Bugs Bunny, cartoonish sort of way.

edit

Well, the covering came today. It's clearly the same stuff, but apparently either what I have has faded a bit or they changed the color over the past 15 years. Same color, but maybe one or two shades darker. Sigh...  Well, what I have is what I have.

OK, here's a progress picture. Man, I wish the wing covering was just a couple of shades lighter, but hey, it's a profile.

so are you gonna test fly it  tommorrow,, "giggle"
have you figured out how your going to approach the area of union between the covering and paint yet?

Mark,

Pretty much the same way I did the stab. I did that while waiting for the mail to deliver the covering. Good timing, that. I'm planning to run some trim down the leading edge and along that joint. My wife wants me to use some checkerboard. may do that. Man, working with iron on as a trim really limits me (probably wouldn't if I was better with the stuff). But is should be an OK plane in the end. It is, after all a dual purpose plane. One to fly in profile. The other to fly when the conditions are too dicey for a full blast PA plane. It will be nice to have around and unlike the Shoestring, if something isn't quite straight, I can use a heat gun to fix it.   ;D

Randy,

It's fun! My wife made me put some checkerboard on the leading edge, but other than that, it's not bad. Looks kinda cool. Just need to get the decals done. I glued the hinges in the control surfaces a little while ago.

Not the checkerboard, the fact that I had to use Monokote Trimcoat for checkboard. Man, what is that stuff 1/32" thick or something?

I really didnt' get a chance to work on it last night. Just shot clear over the decals I'm using (not many). I spent the time correcting stuff on the new PA plane. I'm not overly excited about that. It seems to fly OK, but is a bit overweight thanks to a very heavy bat-finish. Hopefully, taping the hingeline and such will help. Looks like we might get some flying weather on Saturday, so it will get another chance to impress me.

OK, the clear is on (in a darned rainstorm at that). Hopefully, I can assemble the thing tomorrow. May even be dry enough to fly on Sunday. If the weatherliars aren't just poking fun at us again, it will be partly cloudy and 62F (yea, that's not a typo) degrees.

I can't remember who told me, but, Monokote will shrink more the length of the roll.  There less shrinkage across the roll.  Any way that is the way I lay out the covering(Monokote) when I am using it.  On solid surfaces like fuse and solid tail surfaces I just put it on.  Having fun,  DOC Holliday

PS:Randy the plane is looking great.  Still too complicated on the color scheme. LL~ LL~DOC Holliday
