Useing a hand drill as a lathe
« on: January 25, 2009, 02:20:37 AM »
Hi all. I am going to be trying to make my own venturi's for the first time. I am going to have both delrin and nylon to try. I do not have a lathe so am going to be using my hand drill. Now for the question.....does anyone have one set-up for this purpose, or has anyone made a jig to do this? If possible I can certainly design and make my own, but its always fun to see what others have done.  H^^

Mark Allen does this frequently. He never mentioned a jig, but why don't you contact him via this forum? He posts under his full name.

I had to turn a couple of piece out of Al tubing.  So I chucked them in a variable speed dril, grabbed a file and went to work.  I just hand held the drill and file.

I need to get a lathe. :)

You may find that the easiest way is to put the file in a vise. If your doing a venturi one you have the outside done you could chuck the venturi in a 1/2 or 3/8 chuck and do the inside the same way. The file or whatever you wish to open the center with in the vise and work it from the dril against the cutting item. When working in aircraft we manytimes did things the reverse of the expected . 8-)
