Thought I had better move this over here. Finally got a couple of day on the P-47 and the ISW. Yesterday was spent sanding the P-47 wing and then two coats of clear dope. Light sanding today and the weight as it is in the pic is an even 12 ounces. Want to get it to a certain point before I put the flaps on. The flaps are sanded and ready for dope.
Spent this morning working on the ISW as well as the sanding of the P-47 wing. Have exterior shape on the blocks and ready to pop loose and hollow. The turtle deck was fun sanding. Weight of the ISW in the pic is 13.2 ounces. Also a pic of my mess up. H^^

The ISW is looking good Doc. I think I'll wait till this building season to do mine, not so many distractions. What engine you going with on the ISW ?? I've got a Forster 29 planned for mine.

What with the trips to Arizona and then retreiving kids, pluss taking them to Church Camp I managed to get some work done on the planes. Put several more coats of dope on every thing before covering. Poly-span is on the P-47 wing, flaps and tail surfaces. No hinges in the weight calculations yet. With four coats of dope after shrinking the covering, weight is 12.8 ounces. Flaps with poly-span and four more coats of dope, 1.8 ounces. Stab/elevator is 2.6 ounces. Had to take a known weight and check the postals scales as it didn't look right.
The ISW wing, stab and elevator are covered with Poly-ester material from the sewing store. Weight as it is in the picture is 15 ounces even. Have cut out for the pilot and hollowed the forward blocks. Need to make fuel tank and cut nose block to clear the old Fox. More later. H^^
As you can see the demented poodle likes it so far. She is getting used to the dope fumes. jeh

I love the shot of the "demented poodle". I'm just a dog sort of a person, anyway.
It looks like you got along with the trailing edge of the wing towards the outer 1/3 of the wing OK. That makes it blend nicely with the whole shape and allows a nice thin tip. The thinner tip, in the gospel according to Bob Hunt, helps fight turbulence better. Your wing looks really good. Can't wait for the rest.

I am making some progress. Have bottom of the P-47 planked and the pilot head in the ISW. H^^

OK, now I know I'm a slob. I could never in my best days build a model and not get glue smears and fingerprints all over the balsa and plywood pieces. Looking at your airframe I would believe it is held together by magic! Or I can blame the laser cutting soot and save face........NOT!

Hmmm, hinged without a connector/horn? Such happens. I've been known to plank a wing center section without a bellcrank in it...

Finally got the top and bottom planked. Trusty balsa stripper makes good work out of 1/8 sheet. Yes 1/8 instead of 3/32. Hopefully no weak spots when done sanding. Weight as it sits in the pictures is an even 2 pounds. H^^

Is that polyspan covering ? Looks good, especially the tips. What's your secret ?

Yes that is poly-span. The secret is patience and a razor blade. Also a good dope base to start. H^^

That is per the drawings/plans. With the engine plates it can be changed.

This is my design for a 40 - 51 power. The LA46 will be just about perfect, but nothing wrong at all with an ST51.
Drop me a line and I'll send you the PDF files so you can gander it. I gave Doc the first laser cutting just because he is such a great person and he expressed interest in having a "C" model. Not to mention that I like him a lot. I also have the "D" version with the bubble canopy designed.

Very nice! I'm curious, why the planking instead of sheeting? Solely weight or is planking easier, faster?

Planking - like a ship's hull in narrow strips.
Sheeting - in std. wide balsa "sheets" that usually have to be molded.

Yes I am slow, still. Have the blocks on the nose area and waiting for some detail sanding before filling/finishing. H^^

What looks like a rat on the floor, is the wife's tea cup chihuahua. Vicious little critter when riled. Only 4 months old.
