Title: Powdered talc (pure) ?
Post by: Rob Killick on July 06, 2006, 08:35:06 PM
I noticed in a previous post , the use of talcum powder ...
A problem I'm having is getting pure talc powder , to mix with nitrate for a homemade filler .
I see E-bay has it listed , but because I live outside the U.S.A , I'm sure a big bag of white powder being sent to me , probably won't look too good to the custom's officials  ~^
Any thoughts on what other type of talc powder ( or other type of fillers ) I can use , without having my airplane smell like a freshly bathed , baby's butt ? :)

Randy's Zinc Sterate is THE best stuff to use to mix in dope as a filler!

I think he call's it Aero Filler or something like that.  ;D

If not get the talc that smells best to you, and go with it.  x:

I've used a whole lot of Johnson & Johnson Baby powder in the past.  **)

I get real talc from Tap plastics. I've used zinc sterate, called Aero-1 I think by Randy. It also works OK.

I got my zinc sterate from:

I ordered the $36.12 smallest size. Split the cost up with your buddies as there is enough to do 50 planes.

You know, I've never had the question answered...........

Why "pure" talc??

And yes, corn starch DOES work just fine, and you CAN use newspaper to rub out a finish.

Zinc Stearate? Yes! - - Corn Starch? Yes! - - Talc? Never again!

I quit using Talc many, many years ago. It is a potent carcinogen closely related to asbestos, and causes most of the same problems, with similar symptoms.

Don't wanna believe me? Put this in your Google Search Box: "Talc +carcinogen"  without the quotes; you won't use the stuff again, either!

Doesn't talc come from soapstone?  which is in all reallity a ROCK??? n1

Hmmmmmm....... maybe that's what's wrong with me.  We used to make a trip up to Robbins about twice a month with our Coach to the talc mine to get "field marking" powder.  It was just dug upo and ground there and we would load an activity bus down with 50 lb bags.  BTW:  It was a '49 Ford Bus!

I even drove it when I was 13 and 14 around the stadium areas.  j1 j1 x:

I have found that pool/billiard supply stores are a good source of very fine, unscented talc.

Yes corn starch works just fine. I did find it is finer and when sanding caused a lot more airborn particals in the garage, should of had a fan blowing and door open. Not that talc and Zinc Sterate dosn't cause a white cloud, just a lot less.

TY, Hope your wife enjoys her stay.
There is only one la,la land treehuggin place in Colorado, that would be The Republic of Boulder. Lotsa good people there with great life styles, but also a lot of Boulerites are ahead of there time and themselves. There the squeaky wheel that gets the oil and publicity even with there pathetic football team. They use cornstarch to mark there field, funny how the lines disappear every week.
Only go there (15 miles away) if I get juror summons, thats the county seat.

Ty, If your in town sometime give me a call, maby we can go fly at Celestial Seasons and do some dive bombing and straffing on the prarie dogs. Boulder put them on a protected species list cause as we all know they are getting extinct. Yes, great nutcake watching on the Boulder Mall.
I'm in the phone book in Longmont under GA Bohn. I do work nights as a school custodian, gives me time to fly during the day at a park behind IBM during the week and Sundays. My old flying buddy from Boulder goes down to Denver now and flys with the club. Long drive just to fly a few rounds, but nice to talk to the guys. I think were the only two C/L flyers in the area.
The Boulder hobby shop closed down but Hobby Town USA has almost enough stuff to fly C/L, couple Sig kits, lines etc. but no motors. They are very good about getting stuff on a timley basis. You are right, the balsa is made from hybred balsa/maple trees. I get my stuff from the cottage guys or Thompsons Hobbies on South Wadsworth, He stocks Sig all castor and Champion fuel and Brodak kits. Fox and LA engines. Close to being a good old hobby shop.
I'm slightly into N guage trains but havent been to the museum.
Where do you live? Shoot me an e-mail if ya want so we don't tie up the forum

Maybe and maybe not....http://www.cancer.org/docroot/CRI/content/CRI_2_6x_Talcum_Powder_and_Cancer.asp?sitearea=

It's always advisable to wear a dust mask when sanding and there exists a chance of inhaling particulates... this includes balsa.

Right on.  I remember posts a long time ago that many mentioned the constant sneezing and other respiratory problems when sanding balsa.  I have the same problem, but it varies with the batch of balsa.  My really old stuff, no problem, but newer balsa purchased in the last three years makes me sneeze and my nose drip.  NO comments on my nose running are needed, so I said drip. f~ n~

Interesting comments on the old versus new balsa. I can't remember where I heard or read that the cause of the sneezing is the result of our bodies reacting to pesticides used to treat the trees while they are growing... anyone heard this theory?
