Title: Pica Gluit replacements
Post by: Steve Fitton on October 21, 2010, 01:00:39 PM
Guys, its been a few years now since Pica went feet up and their aliphatic glue went away.  At the time, people were using stuff like Titebond or Sig Bond (probably rebadged titebond) to replace Pica.  Has anybody found anything better since then?  I have some Pica left, but it smells rather rancid, and I'm afraid that using it might result in my plane being assembled with yogurt instead of glue....

I've been using Secure-it glue. Supposed to be a Pica clone. Not sure about that, but it works and is quite sandable.

Hi Randy - 'Secure it'  purchased from what source?  I've been very unhappy with the rubber strip coming through the joint with any variety of titebond.  Thanx!   Tom Hampshire

A friend of mine now departed used a white glue from Devcon. It's an industrial product and it dried and handled exactly like  Pica' glue. It might be beneficial to try Devcon and see what they can do for you. There is one cavat. We used to get it in 1 gallon jugs and it has a definite shelf life of about a year. It would develop mold after that so there must be something in it to attract organic life.

Tom,

Truth is, I don't even remember who makes it. I'll look when I get home tonight. I got it from the local LHS.

Hmmmmmmm........... Elmer's Glu All?  It works good, not fuel proof I guess, but then I try to seal stuff that has been glued. ;D  Never would have really thought of using it until I talked to Tom Morris.

Ward... as my Pica stash has fundamentally run out, I thank you for this recommendation! Just what I needed!

I finally looked at the glue. It's called Secure-it by Ambroid (yes, that's Ambroid).

I do a lot of woodworking and have had really good luck with a Gorilla Glue product. Its not the water activated poly glue. Ita a white glue that looks like Elmers glue. I used it on gluing up picture frames. It sets up very fast. I didn"t have to leave the frame in the clamps half as long as with the yellow glues.
