My Blackhawk Fokker D.VII OS .40LA

OK, been sorting out getting pics uploaded from my HTC one. What a PIA! Upgrades, syncs, file sizes... forgot what I wanted to post.

So I started this BH Fokker a few months ago and decided on using an OS .40LA for power after reading that a Fox .35 was just "OK". I used an OS radial alum. mount and did not require any nose ballast after mockup. A Fox needs some due to the scale nose moment. I used 2 pcs. of 1/8" ply for the firewall and notched it into the remaining beams. A couple strips of ply line the engine opening for stiffness as everything forward of the firewall is balsa. I saved 1.1 oz. of weight in the nose but probably gained it back with the engine/ mount. Point is, I didn't have to add any weight for balance.

A couple more fillets around the struts and I'm ready for a sinister looking Rust-Oleum finish. (Polyspan & Minwax Polycrylic)

I may be out of line here but if your building the BH Fokker D7 that was originally  kitted by Sig and your using a 40 you have just created a real dog.
I've enclosed a picture of both the D-7 and the Spad. Both were powered with OS25FP engines. They were faster than you can imagine and highly maneuverable. Downside is they land like a hot turd and getting them to stay on the wheels was problematical. I had friends that used Enya 35 and Os35s and other heavier engines and they were not pretty to watch fly. Rocket speed, no maneuverability and a falling lawn dart as soon as the engine quit.
The kits were truly awful with wood that was almost impossible to shape the L/E without a sharp plane.
In truth a modern 15 like the Fox 15BB would have been more than adequate for the job. After all they are truly small models.
Let us know how it goes when your done with it and it has been flown

I scratch built a lightweight Sig Spad from Sig plans and flew it with McCoy 35RH (no muff) on 60' x .018 lines. It was a tad tail heavy and I used large solid K&B streamline (like giant Perfect Streamlines) wheels to get it balanced...and also to fly off grass. Those lines were way to heavy for this plane. It needed a lot of outboard tip weight to keep the inboard wing up but I don't remember how much. It flew like other bipes but was no speedster and dropped like a rock when the engine shut down. The original published info said the Spad and Fokker were designed for combat (I believe .29).  After a few flights I lost interest in tweaking trim and it has been hanging in my shop since the late 1980s.  Now that I'm retired I may dust the cobwebs off and get it flying again. Most likely on shorter .015 lines as a start.
