Old Silkspan
« on: June 26, 2011, 07:39:49 AM »
I have a bunch of old Sig silkspan that has been stored in the cardboard tube it came in since I quit using it in the mid 70s. It seems to have turned brown. I am in a nostalgic mood and think I would like to cover a plane in the stuff, but am worrying that it may have lost some of its strength over the years?

I think the brownish color is the acidicy of the paper when it first was made.  I had some that was turning brown as it was from a kit from the 60's.  It was just as strong as the stuff I used recently.  It is the dope that makes it stronger.  That's my opinion. H^^

With the price of silkspan these days, don't throw any away!  A little brown stain never hurt anyone!

I have used that kind of silkspan and will not do so again.  A tad brittle is an understatement.

I got some old Sig Silkspan from a local HS and when I wet it, it fell apart. Oh well it was worth a try.
