Nothing on height gages?
« on: December 28, 2021, 07:06:23 AM »
I was finishing a combat kitten while waiting for Winder 2 to arrive. My uncle built it years ago. I had to glue the wing back on. Could not tell by eyeballing if the wing was straight. Did a search for height gauges to find out what you are using and the search turned up nothing? That's surprising. What do you all do to check  for trueness? hold a ruler up on the bench?

Hi Kevin,

I use a digital height gauge from Lee Valley. I’m quite happy with it.

All you need are dividers or a good straight machine ruler.

Well, you do need a really flat slab and perfect ink lines here and there.

A few guys are using laser levels. I have one which is two axis and it seems to be fairly good. A simple straight edge built up with shims is likewise sufficient.

The attached photo is of when I used it to tram in the AOA vane I made for calibration. You can see how well the laser line follows the LE. These can be found on Amazon, Harbor Freight, Lowes, Home Depot and others between $35 and $200.

This has worked for me the last 45 years.....
PERFECT for comparing "this" to "that".
3/32 music wire and a 1" piece for 1/8 brass tube "smashed" just right to hold in it place but allow movement.  Cost?  Check the scrap bin!
