Title: New Ringmaster (just in time)
Post by: Bob Johnson on October 04, 2013, 02:09:10 PM
I thought I'd post a few shots of my new Ringmaster. I hope to maiden flight this weekend for the Ringmaster fun fly In Burlington IA. Not much special( S1 from plans). OS 20fp in the nose, (sorta BBTU setup) also drilled for a Fox 35 stunt. weighs 28.5 oz less fuel. silkspan with Krylon (citrus green and purple) and Lusterkoat clear topcoat. I did do build up wing tips to accommodate the adjustable leadout and tip weight box. Same airfoil, better structure. All the best to all who fly RMs this weekend.. and to everyone else as well.

Beautiful RM Bob!!!

Are you taking it over to Burlington for their Fly-A-Thon tomorrow?? I am going to miss the gang over there. I think they like our group over here at Bloomington/Normal will be trying to get in flights between the showers. I hope no thunder storms because I, for one, will not fly if T storms are near by.

nice lookin ship bob. A quick question, where do you get your hooks to hold the fuel tank. I'm having trouble finding suitable hooks for profiles.

Thanks, Rich

Rich:

I use cup hooks.  You can get them down to about 3/8" across.  I make the holes, screw in the hooks, verify that everything fits, then I unscrew the hooks, put a drop of 5-minute epoxy on each screw, and screw them back in.  I have had exactly zero problems with tank mounting when I do this.

If you want to be really anal retentive about getting an Absolutely Perfect Tank Mounting, then get some thin aluminum (1/32" is best).  Cut a piece out that's about 3/4" wider and longer than the tank.  Bend it into a channel that cradles the top and bottom of the tank and cut slots into the front and back of the sheet.  Then screw that channel into the fuselage with about 1/4" of kick-out in the back and hold the tank on with cable ties.  You'll be able to exactly adjust the height of the tank with ease.

For a Ringmaster, I use cup hooks...

Thanks for the kind words. The tank hooks are just small, hardware store, L hooks that I add an extra bend too.(vise grips and pliers) I use a strip of bicycle inner tube instead of rubber bands to fasten as it lasts longer.

I love that color scheme.   Should be able to see it real good.   I too have used the cup hooks from the local hardware store.

Bob,

You did a great job with your Ringmaster. Kudos!

Complementary colors are exciting, good choice.

Also looks like you painted the pinstripe between the colors.

Gotta teach me how to finish a model.  ;D

That color scheme and the detail is awesome!  Did you say this is normal silkspan?  Medium weight?  I love what you did with this!  Looking forward to seeing the video.

Will this tank setup work correctly?
I think it is OK now because you use FP20 and the 4 (or 3?) oz tank might not be full.
It is a vent tank, but when the tank filled full and inverted, it may act as a uniflow tank because the vent (pressured) tube is in the fuel.

Hello Aki,
Thank you for your interest. The tank is a Hayes 3 oz. clunk type. What is not visible is the pressure tap on the muffler. I run muffler pressure to the tank. The tank can be filled to capacity by tipping it up during filling. This gives a very constant and stable engine run.(see video) The prop is an APC 9x4. On a separate note, I recently flew this set up in 20 mph wind conditions. Too windy for stunts but I was surprised how well it stayed out on the lines.

Best

Bob
