New build Thread SV 11

First I laid th plans out to see what it was going to take



Then I started to gather parts and wood from my supply



Then I squared up 1 side of 1/8 X 4 X 48 Balsa



Then I started to transfer stations to the sides and lay out parameter



Measuring down I drew the center line of the airfoil. I cut both fuse sides together. I cut the doubler's and found out I have no glue. So tomorrow I will glue the .5 CF mat and let sit to dry.

Crist is right its a foamie. I glued the doublers and waiting for them to dry. I will post some pics Tue. Been working on Shirt orders. We need to get those last 12 filled.

Life sometimes gets in the way. I was not able to do much today. I cut the bulkheads and hollowed them. Cut the firewall and got motor mounts ready. I will follow with some pics when I get some more progress done. I would expect to have this framed up in 2 weeks but its moving slow.

So I'd say keep building, just do it and I'm lovin' it!

Notice the plywood squares for cowl mounting screws. I have found this method to work well.

Second photo is fuse less turtle deck at 6.4 oz



last shot is stab complete at 2.7 oz



So lets do a little projected weighs add a 12 oz wing and a few oz for turtle deck and rudder wood work should be around 25 oz and add LG blocks lets say 29 oz total. Paint another 10 oz. Add engine prop spinner tank and the rest of the crap that it takes should be just under 60 oz.

Looking good. You've caught up and will probably have passed me shortly Sparky... After agonizing over alignments and controls for several of my last shop sessions, I finally tacked my stab in last night. *Sighs*

Well, it goes a little quicker from here out and starts to look like a plane when I get the fuse closed up, etc. Then on to the fun part, finishing, oh joy!

Have you thought up a new paint scheme for this one, or are you going a more traditional SV11 paint job?

Hollowed blocks this nose block started out 1.5 oz. I have hollowed it and its now 18 grams. I am going to keep sanding till its 15 grams. I left the front part UN touched till after install, to then be hollowed. Sand the inside perfectly smooth stronger and lighter. This is almost complete.





 when this block is done it will be as smooth inside as outside. Two reasons first is its lighter second is when you crash it doesn't look like you took shortcuts. But lets hope the second one needs not be looked at.

Hey, that looks like mine, I gotta go check my shop and see if it's missing... Only mine is 19 grams... but the Katana does have a 1/2" longer nose moment.

I've never hollowed under the engine, and since I usually end up adding a smidgen of nose weight anyways, I see no reason to. I'm certainly not hollowing that extra gram on my new 75 plane, I figure it needs a little cusion for the pushin there. LOL!  

But I do sand my interior blocks smooth also thinking that it's stronger somehow. I know it applies to polished connecting rods, etc. Not sure if we're correct on balsa, but it does look nicer and makes it easier to see if your hollowing is consistent.

To keep the saw dust down when I do the rough hollowing, I use the exacto circular draw knife and pull out strips of balsa best I can until all that's left is the fine work for the dremel with one of those diamond ball bits that looks like it was dipped in magnetic filings. Then it's down to some sandpaper by hand to smooth out. How do you do it Sparky?

Hi Eric,

Not sure what Sparky does, but I use a piece of old shaped LE (Ringmaster??) w/40 grit to finish sand all the irregularities down smooth.  Then hand sand wit finer just to smooth the sanding marks.

I would bet the PA.75 runs smoother than the ST.60 I plan on using but I will glass the nose with .5 glass cloth

tonight I molded the LE and got the sheeting ready for the wing. Tomorrow I will sheet the wing and post some pics. I should have the airframe together by Monday or Tuesday night. Im getting slow in my old age 2 weeks to build a airplane is slow.

 I used to have a blue head ST.60 R/C engine way back when. I see yours is a natural finish here. I don't even know, were the blue heads just R/C motors or?

Where I'm coming from is that you show the stab and elevators done.  How did you build them?  What weight wood?  How are you doing the hinge slots, type od glue, etc.

I have lived in three different places and really haven't had a lot of desire to fix it.
I will bring my vector to huntersville and go from there.

Tonight I glued the LE to the foam cores and let cure overnight. Tomorrow I will skin the wing and by Sunday it should be up on its wheels.

These are the mold bucks. While waiting on skins I will be molding the turtle deck and I will do a how to in detail on this. What I am doing now has been covered in other threads. See Derek's thread.

That is how Randy normally does it and it seems to work very well.

well the 3 main components are done and the details start now. I will be adding a ellipse fiberglass patch to center of wing before installing it into fuse. what you see here is 22 oz. I am shooting to just under 60 or at 60 OZ. It might happen. the wing complete weighs just under 15 oz 14.9. I would have like to see 13 or so but I used my second choice wood. Guess its time to reorder. This build now is 20 days old.

I am building it exactly to plans and you have no idea how hard that is for me. I do want a base line to see just how much things have changed.

The last couple I did went something like this:
1) Vacuum the wood
2) Apply Monokote
3) Admire your finished model.

Also, I applaud Sparky's use of the venerable ST60 because, guys can extrapolate his setup to their less expensive EVO 60's and pick up valuable tips. 

Top performance starts on the building table,(like Windy always says) and Sparky is going to show you how to get there.

Stab and ele are sheeted foam. Flaps are tapered 3/8. Lightest wood I had.

First I sprayed the wood with cheap hairspray. Then applied Z Poxy and squeegeed it all off. Placed in wing cradles and weighted them down and let dry over night. Final weight of Stab and ELE was 2.7 -final weight of wing was 14.3. These are finished weights less finish. The fuse is 7 OZ.

24 OZ in wood 3 oz LG engine is 13.OZ and lets say all other hardware is 6 OZ and you ad them up thats 46 OZ I am sure it will be 50. So there is 10 OZ left for finish.

Well its all in 1 piece. Wing and flaps came in at 15.9 OZ. finished with 4 coats of dope and paper on them. I will post photos later. I guess my target weight of under 60 is out of the question. Looking for around 64 now. All the wood work (total airframe is 28 OZ now. At least this one wont have a pipe and header as added weight (or a pilot).
