Dare Eng. Sporthawk build (Scratch) / Bash !!
« on: April 24, 2017, 05:35:10 PM »
I'm taking Wayne's (wwwarbird)  advise and starting a build thread on this since the thread on the open forum seems to get hy-jacked on a regular basis. I started by cutting the fuselage, doublers and motor mounts and assembling. All under the supervision of "Bear"

I cut the rest of the parts and then started building the wing.

Wrapped the leadouts to the bellcrank. Sheeted the bottom of the wing along with cap strips. The original Sporthawk didn't sheet the L.E. or have cap strips.

Today I epoxyed the B/C plate, tapped the B/C for a 4-40 bolt, made up a push rod with ball link for the bell crank connection. I then sheeted the top leading edge and cut really light weight 1" pieces for the wing tips ( another bash instead of the plate tips ). I added Sig Faser landing gear to the fuselage.

Thanks Doc !! Today I added the tip weight box, shapped the tip blocks, added the lead out tubes and cap stripped and attached the push rod and sheeted the top center section. Only thing left now is to sand the leading edge to a more blunt shape and get ready to install in the fuselage. The wing as is weight's 7 1/4 oz's I'm still debating on the OS 30 or 35S for power and if I want to add a fuselage tripler ??

Today I mounted the engine and set blind nuts, shapped the leading edge of the wing and mounted it in the fuselage. So far everything is going smooth !! (knock on wood)

Add the tripler, it will finish it,  other than the covering and paint. H^^

Use the smaller of the available venturis. The "large" is too large, and it worked about as you describe for the last 45 years!

I'm thinking that Lee means the older OS .35-S or MAX-S. It's the same case as the OS.30 he's mentioned also.  I don't know if they are the same mounts as the later OS.35 FP-S. If so, it should run well with the smaller venturi like Brett mentions, and start with a 10-4 prop. The model looks like another design based on the venerable Twister wing. I have built bashed Twisters with sheeted leading edges and cap stripped ribs. I usually cut all the ribs the same as the center section sheeting for this purpose. The wing on my Dusty stunt, profile scale model is built this way with one rib bay added on each wing.  We tried using the outer rib and sheeted/cap stripped that wing on one of Sean's Twister/Akromater bashed models when he was a junior. They all flew well, and carried extra weight well, and were very stiff and strong. Watch the balsa weight and not too heavy either.

   Type at you later,

Here's the engines the Max-S If I measured correct the venturi on the 30s is 0.258" and the 35s is 0.299 if these are not the correct size please advise.

Added the nose tripler and sanded to shape, still have more to do on the spinner fit. Made my tank mount and set up the RST4 tank. Starting on the Stab and elevator.

Had to cut new fixed flaps because of the different size wing tips. Attached the fixed flaps and rounded the wing tip edges.

 Lee,

Maybe a dumb question here, but is this wing all built as designed from the kit?

Hi Wayne : No , I used the center ribs as the template so I could sheet the leading edge and use cap strips. The original only sheeted the center 4 ribs and had no cap strips, it also had the plate type wing tips. This wing is 43" compared to 46"

Ok, I didn't think the original design was like that. I like the look of the new wing but why decrease the wing area?

The wing area was reduced because of the different wing tips. I might be wrong but wing tips are just along for the ride arn't they ??

Thanks Mike, I'm getting ready to start doping the wing in preparation of the silk span. I got lucky with the wing to fuselage fit so I'm not sure if I'll do fillets or not.

I cut the pushrod to size and JB welded the insert. Received the Kwik links from Du-Bro and installed the control horn. I added 1/64th ply top and bottom to keep from crushing the wood.

Mike, the landing gear is from a discontinued Sig Fazer kit. Go to Sigs Web site and Click in Aircraft replacement parts, then aircraft parts R/C, then R/C discontinued kit parts, the Fazer parts.

 Lee,

You may have already considered this, but don't be afraid to bend each end of that Fazer gear a bit more to get the model sitting down lower. It will usually take a few tries, with taking them on and off, to get it where you want and with everything lined up. Bringing it down will also widen the track, these are both good things. The Fazer gear works very well on a lot of profiles, it sometimes just takes a little extra fiddling to get everything sitting just right.

I painted the spinner, test mounted the tank assembly and got the proper spinner distance from the fuselage. Need to glue in hinges and attach the fin and rudder and then decide on a tail skid or wheel.

Hinges are epoxied in, fin is tacked in place, marked the rear of the fuselage so I can shape to the rudder and glue it all up.

As is it weights 34 oz. with the OS 35s. I have alittle bit of sanding and shapeing left then dope the remaining wood surfaces and paint with Krylon.

Thanks Crist and Mike, After I get it finished I'll have to get ahold of Larry and Floyd and see how rusty at flying I am. Because of shoulder problems I haven't flown in over 5 years  :( and lets hope the gnats quit swarming by then !! they are terrible here in Western Illinois !! BTW what size lines would be best ?? I've got a new set of Tom Morris 60' X 015's ??

Those lines should work fine for first flights.  Also, to get back in the groove,  short tank it.  When I don't get to fly for a couple of weeks I have to short tank until I get my balance back.  But, then again knowing what the plane does and engine run I can do loops and eights until the engine goes silent.  You'll be pretty close there Lee, ok for first flights like Doc says. Tom's lines are really nice too. I could see this plane finding "happiness" at about 58 feet though.
