Masking material ?
« on: March 01, 2008, 04:13:27 PM »
Hi ,

Seeing how I live in a somewhat remote part of Canada , I was wondering about different masking materials .
I don't have access to a print shop , so I'm wondering if 3M automotive paint tape will suffice for the time being ?
I'm sure i can always use polyethylene sheeting for a large area mask , with 3M tape as the adhesive material , but are there other things I could get , without having any custom cutting done (or for that matter , from a local hardware store) ?

Thanks

Rob K.

I use tin fol every chance I get.  At dollar stores it is usually at least 2 rolls for a $1.  Very easy to work with. (picked up from Windy Urtnowski, Mr. 20 Pointer! LOL!!!!)

I have used the last of the vynal tapes on any of my planes.  The last couple of rolls I bought at the automotive paint store lifted paint when I tried to remove it.  I asked my daughter about the cling wrap they use on dishes with food.  She stated it  stuck pretty good, but, whe went to the kitchen and brought me a box of "Glad Press'n Seal" to try.  The stuff is not flexible, but, it worked great for straight lines.  A single edge razor blade took care of curves where needed.  If and when I can get the wife to take pictures you see the Spitfire I used it on.  Of course the graphics are made from monokote.  Didn't there use to be a masking material that was painted on at one time?  Later, DOC Holliday

Well, back in the old days, we just used making tape and shot clear over it to seal it. Worked OK, but the chance of bleeding was always high. I use stuff called "The Edge" from Finesse Pinstripping. I get it on the web. Works very well. I'm also going to try some stuff I got from Eastwood's (the online car supply place). It's a vinyl material that you are supposed to put on a surface then cut out your design. It has it's own adhesive. Guess we'll see how that goes.

You may want to try rubber cement.  I've used it as a frisket material for mixed media artistic painting.  Try it on a test panel and see if it works for you.  I use lighter fluid (naphtha) to thin it.  The nice thing about it is you can just roll it off when finished with it.  The reason I recommend a test panel is I'm not sure what paint you may be using and its effect on the rubber cement.   H^^

Hi Tom,

I use to use rubber cement to attach home made typing paper stencils to the wings of my planes, plane name, AMA number, etc..  I had no adverse reactions with Sig Dope or Acrylic Lacquer.

OK Guys try this,
Good old fashioned vinyl contact shelf paper.  Draw on it, cut it out, spray paint it, and peel it off.  Use hexane (rubber cement thinner) to remove the sticky stuff if needed.
Also try using the same base color paint to seal the edges of the tape (or mask) instead of clear, if it leaks who cares….LOL  This has worked well long before they had vinyl masks and stripping tape.

Later,
Mikey

Yeah I tried that contact paper on several planes.  Sometimes it worked good, sometimes it didn't.  My problem was getting it to lay over the open bays.  DOC Holliday
