Fixed flaps when to attach?
« on: January 14, 2012, 11:07:41 AM »
it has been a while, on something like fa flite streak is it easier to attache the fixed flaps before you glue in the wing, already covered, or glue in the wing and then the flaps and cover?  I usually cover first, but have not build a wing with stationary flaps in a few years.  The covering will be ultrakote.

Also tips on getting the flaps lined up.  thanks

Dave,

I'm building a FS but I have built a few before, a few with fixed flaps and a few with movable flaps.

Simply draw a center line through the airfoil opening on each side of the fuselage. Carry the line far enough to go beyond the width of the flap.

I'd put the wing in place permanently then the flaps. You can tape them in place, then hit them with CA.

Do a side at a time.

Unless something better comes along, this is what I'll do.

Was your LE or TE warped? Old kit or a repro?

I have an OS 20 for mine, what will you use in yours?

I cover the wing and install it in the fuselage.  Then install the flaps and cover them separately.

I install flaps and elevators early on, before covering and before all wing sheeting is installed.  This is because the hinge line often needs final sanding for perfect fit and to correct any binding.  This is easier without having to mess up the covering.
