Title: LittleAxe on a diet
Post by: minnesotamodeler on September 18, 2006, 07:49:45 PM
Rotten pics, I know, and pleae ignore the mess...but this is the latest and greatest version of my LittleAxe 1/2A stunter.  Major structural changes to lose a BUNCH of weight.  Earlier versions consistently hovered around 15 oz.--quite a load even for the Norvel .061.  I'm shooting for 10 oz. with this one, I think that'll put it over the top concerning the performance I want.  As it sits, it's about 5.5 oz.   More nearly finished than it looks.

Ray,

I've been doing a lot of research on covering with silk lately and ran across this:

Material oz./sq. yard.

Airspan 0.67
Litespan 0.85
Light Colored Japanese Tissue;3 thin coats of nitrate dope 0.87
Colored Micafilm 1.03
Light White Silk;5 coats thin nitrate dope 1.13
Fibafilm 1.23
Colored Skysail;4 coats 50/50 butyrate dope 1.62
Black Silkspan;5 coats thin nitrate dope 1.66
Colored Transparent Monokote 1.69
White Japanese Tissue;4 coats 50/50 butyrate dope 2.18
Colored Nylon;6 coats 50/50 butyrate dope 2.19
Opaques Colored Monokote 2.22
Coverite 21st Century Film 2.31
White Super Coverite 2.40
Colored Super Coverite 2.70

Note: These figure should be used for indication only.

I knew silk and dope was one of the lighter finishes  but didn't realize it finished this light.  I weighed 1 square yard of lightweight silk at the post office and it was .3 oz.   y1

Hi Tom, I thought I replied to this once but it's gone...anyhow, thanks for the info, it's very interesting.  I wonder where the "lite" films would place?
