Title: Liquid Masking Film
Post by: Gary Anderson on May 12, 2008, 10:59:10 PM
Hi guys,

Has anyone tried using the product, Liquid Masking Film? Seems like it could save alot of time. Wouldn't it be easier to use making round corners, rather then cutting out masking taped? Some times what seems to be a good idea can cause a lot of heart ache. If you ever pulled off a strip of masking tape and pulled up the new paint job, this might be a better way to go. Would appreciate any input, thank you Gary

I have a jar, had it for several years, tried to use it a couple times but ended up scraping the idea and went back to tape. My problem was trying to cover only what needed covering.. Might be a trick to it but I don't know what it is..

One of the problems I have had working with liquid mask is the inconsistant edge thickness, it can cause paint to bridge up andmake a more pronouced edge. It is also like aplying pinstripes to put it where you want it and getting just the right edge. For me, tape is a better alternative,, the right tape that is

I have used it a lot for weird paint jobs on motorcycle tanks, fenders, etc.  If it is brushed on, it is very inconsistant in thickness.  I sprayed it for an even thickness, plus I covered the entire item to be painted, then cut out what was needed for designs.  I doubt if it would be very practical for model planes.  If it is appied too thin, the paint will actually go thru it and bond the mask to the under surface.  I know this from experiences I don't even want to think about anymore. I've tried it with, as others have noted, inconsistent results. I tried spraying it on then cutting out the design. Had a lot of tears (the stuff is pretty delicate) and ended up just stripping it off and using tape. I can see where you could do pretty elaborate designs with it if you could get it to stay put.
