Although flying isn't on the menu till my shoulder gets better I can build and when I saw this kit I couldn't resist. It's laser cut and ready for the Brodak wing jig which I happen to have. First off I built a work table which will do double duty between this build and my N scale trains. It is 4' X 2' and made from 1" X 4" X 8' pine boards from Menards. Including the ends there are 5 braces from front to back so there won't be any sag by the 1/2" hardboard,drywall and topped with glass.

I have both wing panels built and just about ready to join. According to the directions you put half of the jig rods (5/16" OD ) in each panel and join... NO dihedral. So far no big problems although rib 12 is about 1/16" short of the leading edge, this is on both panels so I'll send John a note. Not a problem I just filled with scrap. BTW my dog Bear is supervising !!

Looking good. I myself built a two piece wing once and then joined it together. Never again even now we have wing jigs I may try again. I see you are working your helper too hard also.

The wing panels joined up just like there suppose to, nice and straight. Next is the wing gear blocks then some sheeting. Oh Doc
not so loud about over working my dog..the lib's will have the ASPCA after me...

Well when I'm in the shop I have three keeping me under control, Sandy the demented poodle, Teddy the tough guy tea cup Chihuahua and Prissy my legal Mexican Chihuahua. That wing is looking good. I hope you can find relief for that shoulder also.

I installed the torsion blocks on the landing gear blocks and installed in the wing and sheeted the bottom leading edge. The directions said the L.G. blocks would be even or slightly above the sheeting, but that isn't the case as they are about 1/8" below. No problem, I cut some 1/4" balsa to fit and sanded smooth, now I'll harden with some old c/a and screw them into the L.G. blocks to hold the landing gear in place.

Landing gear block covers finished. I used a piece of 7/32" Aluminium tube sharpened on the end to cut the holes for the gear opening. This makes a lot smoother hole than a drill bit.

Thanks Crist, we've been spoiled here in the 50's for 3 day's !!
Installed the B/C mount per plans and 3" B/C along with adj. lead out guide. I added extra bracing to the bottom of the B/C mount, instructions showed about half as many but since I'm not concerned with the extra weight I went with more. Looks good Lester.

I just received mine. The kit looks really good. A bargin at $109 IMO. Think I'll turn mine into a Veco version. Move R13 over a 1.25" for 3/4" asymmetry, and do the same to the flaps. Also, take some of the "hump" out of the back.

Just a heads up, the top nose block in my kit is an 1/8" too small height wise when laid on the plans. Don't know if the plans are drawn incorrectly, or the block too small. Will have to wait until I get F3 glued in to know for sure. Shouldn't be that big of a problem. Will have to glue some 1/8" shims to where it makes contact with the fuse.

Gonzo, just a heads up..the trailing edge sheeting in my kit was shown on the parts list as 2pcs of 1/16" X 1/2" by 25" balsa and that is what was supplied. It should be 4pcs. 1/16" X 1 1/2" X 25" balsa. So you'll need to supply that, I told John about it so maybe your kit was revised. Also with reducing the inboard wing size your leadout wire should be plenty, mine at the shown size of the wing was to short for my taste. Good Luck

Sometimes the plans are off a little bit, they used to put a disclaimer in the instruction book.
I'm also going to add the air scoop on the bottom of the fuselage, don't know why there isn't one.

Top side of the wing is done, now to remove the flaps and flip over and finish up the bottom. I can tell I'm a little rusty on this build some fits weren't as good as I wanted and had to be replaced but I'm catching on.

Wayne, that was the way the kit does it. I was tempted to carve both wing tips but changed my mind, am trying to stick to the kit as much as possible.

Hi Lee,

My son Aaron (he's 39yo) built a Brodak Thunderbird I kit. He did it straight by the book and the main portion of the wing was dead straight, but when he added the tip sections, the outboard wing warped *up*. Not too bad upright but a killer inverted. Now we have to get the warp out. Good luck with yours!

Thanks mike. Bill: I think when I joined the 2 wing halves is when the twist developed. I just ordered 2 SS,303,5/16" dia X 6' rods from Grainger. There 9.09 each and should eliminate future problems, this way I can build the wing in one solid piece.

Hi Lee,

While joining two halves can cause no problems, once in a while........... I did the Windy thing and got two 3/8" X 6' steel rods. They work VERY well. I also got (4) 3/8" X 36" alum. match arrow shafts which I really like. They are very stiff and u can sight them while they are set up. I use two pieces of sleeve the ID of the shafts to join them. I do have to accurately punch (or tell the laser cutter to) the alignment holes.Most of the time i make a jig to line up on the C/L and set even with the TE. All pretty easy. Good luck with the Hurricane, I have an Aero kit of that model and want to build it one day.

How can anyone build a Hurricane without dihedral? Straight wings look "droopy".
