What diameter wire does everyone use for leadouts on the various size models?

Hi Geoff,

I usually use .029 cables. I bought a set of racing lines some years back, from Sig, and now have a lifetime supply of leadouts.

I've been using .027 for 40 sized planes and bellow when fabricating my own. Probably the absolute lower limit. I just went upstairs and measured Tom Morris prefab. .035. Wow. Guess they're good for sixty sized planes. They're also a bitch to keep around an eyelet.

I use .027" on everything above the .20 size engine.   For the smaller stuff I use scrap .018" flying line.

.027" 7-strand corecable is rated at 125 pounds.  Two of these lines can lift 250 pounds.  I weigh less than 250 pounds.   So what good will it do me to have leadouts that can lift a 400-pound pilot?

In a very mass-conscious world  we can't afford overkill.   If my .027" leadouts ever fail I will rethink this.

The last BC I bought from Windy had the flexible leadouts attached. They measured .034. The last  (super flexible) I bought from Randy were .034. For some reason I still use solid leadouts on my .35 sized OTS ships. (Love to hear them rattle in the truck on the way to the field)! They measure .031 (1 / 32nd).

How 'bout metal fatigue. Probably why the professionals use such thick stuff.
