Engine for Huges H-1 Racer
« on: April 18, 2019, 08:03:33 AM »
I am building the Hughes H-1 Racer from scratch from the plans by G. & R. Berringer & Steve Moon & I need some info on the engine, since I don't have an engine & I am building the plane just because I like it and many of the early racers.

The plans call for a 4 stroke 56 to 72 size only with a 13" prop. What I would like to have is an example of a good engine that would be used by anyone flying the plane. I need the engine & tank size complete with all mounting dimensions or where I can find it. I want to build it so that the cowling can be removed & the engine/ tank added at any time.
The plane has a 6" round fire wall & 4" long cowling, W/S 61-1/4", the Fuselage is 46-1/4 ".

Thanks for your help, RK Flyer   H^^

Just in case you want to add some cockpit detail for your Hughes H-1, here is a photo of the replica H-1 built in Cottage Grove, Oregon.  The instrument panel is supposed to be an exact copy of the original.

Wow  #^ That's great , Many thanks!

Do you know where I can find any other pictures of it or other 1930's Racers? I have some of the old pictures of the Gee Bee I found on E Bay.

Thanks again! RK Flyer :)

I'm sure there would be more photos in the EAA magazine, Sport Aviation. Not sure what issue, but that could be searched.

If you can find a copy of the Historical Aviation Album, Volume XVI produced by Paul R. Matt, published in 1980, it will have probably one of the best articles on Howard Hughes and his Hughes Racer.

31 pages, lots of photos of the aircraft and details including landing gear, cockpit, engine installation and other interior details.  Includes 6 full pages of 3-views giving details of both the short and long span wings built for the airplane.

I built several of the Berringer designed models some years ago.  The first was a Sportster which had a Saito 56 installed.  I then built 2 of the Sukoi stunters using the Saito 72.  Tanks as i recall were either slightly under 4ouuoz. for the 56  to slightly over 4oz for the 72.

There is a series of books by Reed Kinert on "Racing Planes and Air Races".  At least 12 volumes.  Volume III covers air racing from 1932 to 1939.  Lots of pictures, some 3-views and some stories about the various annual National Air Races.

More pictures of the Hughes Racer.  This exact replica was built by Jim Wright of nearby Cottage Grove, OR.  I took these pictures at the Eugene airport.  The plane used to fly up and down I-5, and occasionally over my house, until the required testing was complete.  Unfortunately, about a year later, it was lost in a crash near Yellowstone Park.
