Hi guys, on the pens I bought the instruction read, for cleanup use a ultrasonic cleaner. Is there a way to clean these pens without all the extra equipment? Didn't realize that these pens could be a pain in the back side. They are nice pens but maybe throw aways would have been a better way to go. Would appreciate any info, thank you, Gary

In my drafting days, I always just soaked them in water, which worked fine. They do have to be scrupulously clean to flow well.

Y'know, "all the extra equipment" isn't all that much. Check www.Amazon.com for "ultrasonic cleaner". For $50 - $60 you can get one that'll do most engines, too. These things are useful!

I bought a jar of cleaning solution at the Office supply that is made by Kolinohr. it has a small basket with a handle in it that allows you to remove the head of the pen and put it in the bottle for soaking. I leave them in there for long periods of time sometimes! The jar was about $5.

Thank you guys, I'm going to see if Michael's Arts and Crafts has some of the solution. The different ones I have checked with do not have a clue what I'm talking about. I found the pens at Michael's so maybe they have the solution Thanks for your input, Gary

Gary,
Someone, on one of the forums, coined a new acronym.....something like "CGF". His had 4 letters, so this is not quite correct, but the jest of it was "Check Google First". Not that you can't find good information here, but the web is full of an unbelievable amount of information, and Google can find it in a flash.
This was just one site that it found for cleaning the pens:
http://www.methart.com/tutorials/cleaning.html
Check it out, and also run a Google search....you'll instantly find scores of web sites with information...probably more than you want to read. Kolinohr does produce cleaning solution, but you might just try alcohol first. Good luck.
Cheers.

Thank you, Warren for the link!
That is really all there is to cleaning the pens. I have done exactly that when I left ink in the pens and it dried out.
I *try to remember* to take the tip assembly off, dump the ink in the container, and put the tip in the solution jar when I am finished with the job to prevent ink from drying out inside it.

Hi guys, after a great day at the flying field I decided to try the alcohol method. Worked great, thank you Warren and Bill, the only one I had a little trouble with was the 00 pen, a very fine hair, but I got it and maybe if I do it right I won't have to go to that much work again. (Notice I said maybe, Ha Ha ) Gary

Bill Huang has an article on "Cleaning Drafting Pens" on the PAMPA web site (http://www.control-line.org/DesktopDefault.aspx). Click on "Resources", "Tips & FAQ", "Construction FAQ".
As I remember, there is also an article by Bill Huang on drawing panel lines that might also be helpful.

Hi Bill, thank you for the information. I checked it out and I believe I'm going to make a copy of it for my files. If I don't, I forget how I did it. Just old and ???? Thanks again, Gary
