Just couldn't wait
« on: September 09, 2015, 01:05:25 PM »
I got the plans as soon as I could get them printed.  Made the ribs and the spar.   I am slow on this as I want it to make an impression.   The wing was in a jig for the center section sheeting that is on it.  Need to sheet the other side and do the tips.  By the way this the way my shop looks right now.  The WorkMate will be moved once the wing is at a covering point.

Whatcha building?  It looks like a way-high aspect ratio.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Way to go Doc! What do you plan for power?

I'll be very interested in watching this one come together, I've got the plans and am considering one myself. y1

I see Gary must have looked at the ribs picture and also part of the great plan shows the nose of the profile.   Covering will be Poly-Span.  Thanks to Don for a great set of plans.

Doc-
How did you like building the wing around the spars? Did you like the uprights for spacing the ribs and did the ribs all fit?? I draw these plans by hand so I know mistrakes can happen. Far as I know you are the first one to build a wing using that technique, least from one of my drawings.

I guess I misread a post.  Power will be two LA 25's I have on a twin engine Ringmaster.   Figured by the time I get this built I should some time in the air with them.

Don, the ribs fit great between the spars.   I joined the spars both panels before putting ribs in place.  Did double the center rib.  Center sheeting I left solid as I didn't think much weight was saved by leaving it open with cap strips.  I also am inserting webs on the trailing edge sheeting.  If you notice I only cut vent holes in the ribs fore and aft of the spar.  I doubled checked the plans and the outer panels have anhedral in them.   I am going to leave them that way.   Will get more pictures as it progresses.   Grandson's football game kept me out of the shop part of the day.   His team won and one tackle he made stopped a first down and got the team the ball back late in the game.  They made 3 TD's and a 2 point conversion.

Well the sheeting is on as well as the wing tips.   Don't look too close as I found a missing cap strip and the corner gussets.  What you see is 10.8 ounces ready to carve and sand.  Have been tracing parts for the fuse.

That's looking great John!  Let me know when you are ready to fly it.  I've got plans for Lew McFarlands P-38 stunter and some new Veco .19s for it.  Maybe I'll get one built this winter to fly along with your machine.

Have started carving and sanding on the wing.  Also had get the strip wood for the fuse.  Been busy trying to get planes back in the air and trying to keep grass stains off them.  Of course no worry when I have 10 foot bottoms.  The LA is giving me fits in the Ringmaster Imperial.  Also we have the marathon coming up and I want to see how many different Ringmaster and variants in the air.  Especially the twin and canard.

Got a little more done on the B-25 since last post.  These are the fuselage and engine pods.  Also the main landing gear.

Just don't rush me.   As the late great Tom Lay said at VSC one year as he was going up front to give out an award:  "I got two speeds and the other one is slower".  Wish I could have gotten to know him better.

Just wanted to add that since the weather is cooperating I have been making a walk to the shop so the shoes don't get muddy.

Need to settle down and get busy.   Here are pics of the engine pods.  Need to grind little on one before putting ply on it.  Dave has my elevator horn ready.  Went to hobby shop and only hinges they had were for 1/4 scale.

Yesterday spent time in the shop cutting flaps, elevator and stab.    Thanks to David Trible I now have bell crank and control horns.   It is great having friends to make things for me.   Can't thank him enough.  Guess I need to take a picture of the hardware when I think of it.

The pictures came out fuzzy,  but you can see it's taking shape.   Getting ready to fit engines to the pods.

Maybe when I get a little further along.  I can honestly say this is going to be one big plane.   The fuse is almost 4 feet long.

I spent a couple of hours on making the stab/elevator for the B-25.   Will be cutting a slot to install on the fuse.   Also picked up the tubing for the lucky boxes.   Dave Trible made the bell crank and horns for me.  Thanks Dave.

Had it partially put together, but too cold and snowy plus the camera kept fogging up.  Did get some time in the shop and did some sanding plus filling in the shop.   Using Crist's idea on wing tip weight box got one installed.
