Super Chipmonk
« on: September 14, 2009, 07:28:12 PM »
I'm building a super chipmonk and I followed the instructions which have you assemble the fuselage and then the wing. The wing is sheeted in the front and rear and in the process of applying the sheeting the landing gear gets install so that it is under the sheeting. So now come time to slide the wing into the fuselage and it can't go because of the gear. Has anyone else run into this problem and what are some solutions?

Walt: You should have the landing gear blocks be flush with the wing sheeting so all you do is take the gear clips off and take the gear out. A picture of your situation would help. This should show what I mean.

First let me say "beautiful job" on that wing.... Well like a fool I followed the instructions and epoxied the gear wire and blocks and stop blocks in place. I also set the blocks down in further so that the sheeting would lay over top not realizing any of what you are telling me.... A quick question, what are gear clips if you'll excuse my ignorance. You see I have another kit and I don't want to repeat mistakes.
At this point I am thinking I might create a kind of trap door where the wing fits using the original body parts, reinforcing with more wood, (maybe plywood) between the two lower rails and using screws to button up. It won't look as clean but it's the best I can come up with.
Anyone else want to chime in I'd be happy to listen.

Just don't install the wing by sliding it into the fuselage. Cut the bottom fuselage sides off, angled to the rear, from the leading edge to the trailing edge of the wing. Now lay the fuselage on top of the wing, it will fit into the wing saddle. Trim appropriately, glue carefully, then re-install the bottom piece you cut out and reinforce where the cuts were made. This is a very common method of installing the wing into the fuselage.

The Sig Chipmunk is an excellent design but it hasn't been updated in many a'year. For your next project I suggest a Brodak Kit, possibly Vector 40 but there are others. All have an instruction book that will expose you to many building techniques you will be using throughout your C/L modeling journey.  8)

Walt, Thanks. I think the correct name is Landing Gear Retaining Straps. And like Pete said when your fuse is built cut out the bottom on angles, slide and glue the wing in and glue the fuse piece back in. Reenforce the cut with 1/64th or 1/32 ply on the inside. Once you fill and silkspan and paint you'll never see it.

Here's how you use the clips. Again as Pete said Brodak kit's come with step by step instructions with pictures. This Hawker Hurricane is a Brodak kit I built totally from the instruction book. At that time I had no computer and hadn't built a plane in over 10 years.

Thanks Pete, I have seen a few Brodak kits that are of interest so I'll put some time in there and see if I can find something affordable. Since retirement I wanted to find something to do with myself in the winter besides watching TV and I remembered the time I spent in the service building these models so here I am today learning all over again. I will look for those clips and use them when ever I can because it just seem to make construction easier. Once again the pictures are a great help.

Thanks

Leester,
On those clips will the local hobby shop have them? ... I also have a question that is more a matter of opinion for you or anyone of experience out there. When it comes to buying kits is Ebay a good source or should I go somewhere else? I tend to like kits that you build from scratch rather than ARF type which are so common now a days. Is there a maker who takes old designs and creates kits or are we left with following old plans to do that?

Walt the retaining straps should be at a LHS. On line hobby shops are very convenient and www.sshobbies.com  is the cheapest and Joe and Sebra are great people. They can get those straps also, your Brodak kits would include them if needed. Ebay is in my opinion not the place to go, you'll have better luck in the classified here or SSW. You can get good deals on Ebay but you never know what you'll get. Good Luck, Also ask here first if theres a question even if you think it's stupid better playing it safe.

Let me make one comment.

I recall reading the guide for appearance judging, and it mentions (I think!) that you should get a better score by not seeing things like the clips etc. on the bottom surface of the wing.

Now I am guessing that that mainly affects only those guys at the NAT's, and not your typical local type contest.

Alan,
Hi just want to say I am getting back into the hobby of making balsa airplanes from kits and I am very green as Leester and Pete guessed. I have no problems with asking people who know more than me what the answers are so thats why I'm here. As far as those clips go it will most likely be more than a few years before anything I build warrents a judge. As long as they fly well and I can get the grand children to help that will do for now.
Thanks
Walt
