Refinishing a wing
« on: May 21, 2008, 10:13:47 PM »
I have a wing and stab from a plan that some day will be refinished.  I used dope and tissue the first time around, do I have to stay with that or can I go with iron on film if I choose?

Thanks,

James

Hi James,

You can go to an iron-on, if the structure is strong enough without the additional strength which doped covering adds and if you remove the old stuff. If you don't get most of the dope off, it may blister when you apply heat to the iron-on covering.

Removing the dope and covering can be a job----some use sandpaper; I have used lots of paper towels and acetone/lacquer thinner.  Neither method is any fun.  If you use the acetone/lacquer thinner, remember the hazards of the chemicals.

Cheers,
Jim

When I refinished the Cobra, I used some Jasco stripper. It took off everything and I mean everthing. Right down to the wood. The silksapn came off in sheets.

Say Randy - My Jerseyan is coming up for a rebuild, and I have stripper in mind.  Did using it give you problems when the new finish went on?  Did you do anything exotic to remove the traces of the stripper?  Thanks... Tom H.
