I just should have stood in bed
« on: December 14, 2007, 06:40:28 PM »
I've said here before that I basically use three spray guns. I have a cheap Harbor Freight gun with a 20oz metal cup, a DeVilbiss Finishline gun with a plastic, 4oz cup and the new SATA Mini-Jet gun with a 4oz metal cup.

Well, I usually use the DeVilbiss gun to shoot color. I had just shot some color and was cleaning up and went to take the plastic cup off and the thing split right where the threads go into the gun. OK, stuff happens and I figured I'd see if I could get a metal cup for it to sort of avoid this problem in the future. I found one (or thought I had). Not real cheap, but not horrible and I ordered it from some outfit that sells it through eBay motors. The cup arrived today and I took it out of the box and low and behold, it doesn't fit. Right layout, but it has course threads and the gun has fine threads. I look on the box and the cup is for a Binks gun. My fault, I suppose. I had foolishly assumed that there would be something resembling standardization with these things. Guess not. I'm waiting to hear back from the outfit to see if they even carry the correct cup. Not sure if they sent the wrong one or I chose the wrong one.

Guess we'll see. The descriptions on these sites aren't the best and it seemed to say it would fit my gun.

Sigh ...

RANDY "STANDING ON YOUR HEAD...WHILE IN BED???? HUMMMMM? HOW KINKY IS THAT GOOD BUD? TOO MUCH INFORMATION?
What U do in your bedroom......Well never mind my demented brain is stickin out! n1 VD~
Uh...back the damned plastic spray bottles...Yeh! I used to have a few plastic bottles that I modifed to my DeVillieebusted' EGA 502 touch up gun...and just drilled a hole into the top caps..for a tight press fit...They worked great for a while until the plastic caps started to stretch if I left them attached to the spray gun.

Good luck...Randy! (and stop standing in bed..I hear it is hell on those new water beds. LL~

Hi Donny,

This is an HVLP gravity feed gun. Most guns have the female threads on the cup (including both my cheap HF gun and the SATA and most other's I've had). The Devilbiss has the male threads on the cup, so it's incompatible with all the other guns I have laying around. Figures that the thread on this cup is incompatible. Sheesh!.

I'm sure I'll figure something out eventually. Even if I have to machine and new connector.

By the way: The phase was a paraphrase of Leonard McCoy in Star Trek II: "Bet you wish you'd stood in bed." He was paraphrasing W.C. Fields in "Never Give a Sucker an Even Break" with the line: "If I'd a known it was going to go like this, I just should have stood in bed".

so a paraphrase of as paraphrase of a paraphrase.   ;D

Randy...

I have the same DeVilbiss  gravity gun... the plastic cup has the male threads on the end of the cup.. I looked it up on DeVilbiss.com... the model no for the cup itself is..SRI 478-K12.  doesnt offer a way to purchase it from them but at least you have a model number for the cup...I would try a local automotive paint store or a DeVilbiss repair center in your area.. We have one here in Kansas City... if you dont have any luck there.. let me know and I'll go pick you one up and send it to you.. I have a classic car restoration shop so I deal with paint daily..

Thanks Chris. I was hoping to replace the plastic cup with a metal one to avoid this sort of thing in the future. The plastic cup was pretty thin at the threads. But hey, if I can't get a metal on to fit (or can't machine something to make this one fit, I may have to go ahead with a plastic one.

Randy..

ohhh sorry... guess i forgot you wanted a metal one.. but they make two metal ones for that gun.. one is same size and shape as the nylon one.. and the other is more squat and wider but same capicity... 4 oz i think.. i went to DeVilbiss.com... took me to another site.. had all the major brands on there.. but i clicked on the DeVilbiss one.. then on HVLP... then i think touch up .. and it brought up the gun and showed it in the two metal cups and listed the others.. sooo.. go there and look at them... go to local automotive paint place.. and they can order you one.. or see if there is a DeVilbiss repair center near you..  Type in     autorefinishdevilbiss.com/product.php?pg=27     will take u directly to the site.... 81-381 is the squat style.. 8 oz  and the standard one is 54-5548 4 oz  (like the nylon one)

Bill..
I've been paintin for several years.. have never seen a metal lid for a gravity gun... always nylon or plastic... some better than others... some screw on most snap on.. or in as the case may be.. i usually just go to my automotive paint supplier to get my guns and repair parts.. sometimes they have upgrades to a better lid than the original.. at least they did for my Accuspray gravity feed..(an early HVLP gravity gun) before i bought my latest DeVilbiss

Hi Chris,

No luck around here on any one stocking repair parts.  I will have to order.

I would REALLY like to switch over to a metal set up like I have seen on a few guns that I DON'T have........  a new $80-$100 spray gun or enough wood to build a new plane.... hmmmmmm....... new plane wins out!  Especially since the old one does a better than adequate job.

Chris,

The 54-5548 4 oz is the one I was supposed to get. The cuplooks identical, but the threads on the cup are course and the threads on the gun are fine. Sigh...

Hopefully, they just sent the wrong one. I haven't heard anything from them yet.

Randy..

I just went out to the shop this evening to look at my spray gun.. I unscrewed the nylon cup and looked at the threads... they are not a standard thread.. if u look closely.. they are a different thread that the metal cups... so .. this means.. you are stuck with the nylon cup.. it appears from the site i visited that there are two different spray gun bodies.. one for the metal cup.. and one for the nylon cup... maybe u can keep the metal cup u got.. and just re-thread the gun body... .. sorry...
