RSM's Shoestring Build ?
« on: October 03, 2009, 10:49:55 PM »
Hi ,

I was looking over the plans to Bob Whitely's "Shoestring" RSM kit) and was wondering how the wing is to be inserted into the fuse (I want to run the pipe tunnel in this kit) , without really messing up the pipe tunnel ?

Can it be done in the conventional "cut out the bottom of the fuse , to allow the wing to be inserted" , or is there a different way , I'm not seeing ?

Thanks ,

Rob K.

Hi Rob,

you could cut the top of the fuselage and drop the wing in that way.

Hey Rob: you might get lucky and it'll fit in the wing cut out. My RSM Tucker Special did. Good Luck on the build when you start it and show some pics.

You could also build the fuselage ON the wing; but I'd call Eric and ask.

(Too many irons; not enough fire)

Gentlemen ...

Thanks for the suggestions .

Methinks I will consider Matt's option , as the fuselage formers are in upper and lower pieces (most of them) and I think that the fuse-formers that are in the vicinity of the wing cut out .
Another thing that came to attention , is that using a seven (7) oz. fuel tank will be , that I have to remove part of the wing , leading edge (inside the fuselage and behind the fuel tank) .
This will be my first "piped ship" and I'm just trying to do it justice .

Thanks again Fellas  ;D

Rob

My copy of the drawings shows that the fuselage is split vertically at about half of wing chord. I have not seen the parts to confirm this, but if the kit is per the drawing that I have, you slide teh wing into the front of the fuselage and side the back part over the back of the wing complete with the control system.

Cheers

Hi Geoff ,

You're absolutely correct  y1

I went over the plans and saw the second split line over the wing and beneath the turtle-deck .

One further question ...

Should I taper the trailing edges of the flaps , etc. , or build them , as per plan ?

Thanks again ,

Rob, since nobody else has answered and the man is currently indisposed—but doing OK I understand—if it were mine, I would taper the flaps and elevators.

Remember that I only have the plan and have not seen the kit. Also, I watch the sun rise over the Pacific just ten minutes down the street.

I have read that rounding the trailing edges of flaps and elevators is not a good idea but I have not tested it. I like the look of the tapered flaps and elevators and, by all the reports that I have seen, they perform well. Other factors govern the aerodynamics.

If you aren't in a hurry, check with Bob W when he is back on deck.

Cheers, Geoff
