I do silly stuff so you don't have to.
« on: June 17, 2007, 05:55:06 PM »
Here are a couple more pics of the new plane. The wing is out of the jig, but I sort of freelanced on the tips. Comes from not really be sure what you will do when you start, I guess. These things seem to work themselves out more or less, but it wasn't exactly elegant.

One pic of the fuse. The bottom blocks are tacked on, the nose block is just sitting there. I'm still deciding if it will get a real canopy and cockpit or just a paint on. Stay tuned.

Couple of things I forgot. The all up weight of the wing in the last picture is about 9oz. Heavier than I had planned, but within limits. I got carried away with the gear reinforcement. After bouncing the Novi, I was a bit paranoid.

The gray stuff on the TE of the wing in the last picture is a bit of filler. I had a little mismatch in the TE. I screwed up and use 1/16" sheet on everything except a little stretch between the TE and the sheet in front right behind the bellcrank (about a 1/4" wide). I don't know how I didn't notice. That little, shot piece was a chunk from the scrap bin. I realized after it was glued on that it was 1/20". Sigh. So, a little filler. It should block out fine.

The wing is rough yet and only basically sanded and the tips are shaped not at all. But it's built.

9oz?  That's criminal, lets KEELHAUL HIM!  Actually what you are reading is the rant of a supremely jealous hack!  That wing looks great, I would not toss out eh "heavy" stab you mentioned either.  Looking at the fuse, I am curious what the final shape will be!

GREAT set of build threads R-man, keep them coming, and keep at least one of us VERY jealous...

Dennis,
Well, I was hoping for about 8oz. But this will probably do. I do like it because of the resistence to twisting. Even without covering.

Gary,

Yea, yea, yea. When I get it blocked off, you won't see the difference. Hey, I should lose a couple of grams when it sanded. That's something.

Mark,

I'll keep to the original ... with a couple of twists, no doubt, I'll cogitate on the canopy. You know how I had doing cockpits. Maybe I can get a Ghost Rider figure.

Hi Leester,

Randy is now on restriction!  Violation of two major rules:

1. the admitted use of pooty (as Wendy says)

2. the unbridled whining about a 9 oz. wing that is probably closer to 800 sq. in. than 600 sq. in.    Such a crime!!!!!!!!!!!!  (NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

No video games for you Master Randy, for a whole month!!!!!!!  y1

Bill,

It's about 640 square inches. I'm not whining about, I just think (as I usually do) that it could have been lighter. Heck, they can always be lighter.

Weirdly, it seems I build a really light plane (the Slider is about 53oz) and then put out a some heavy toad. Not sure why I can't maintain the weight issue with some planes.

Projected eventual weight of this sled is 58oz. Powered with (probably) a Tom Lay OS46VF. That engine really runs well and if I can keep the weight reasonable, should preform well.

And the bottom block and such should be interesting. I forsee, um, gills?

Randy did you change your mind on the leading edge of the wing ? It looks like it had cap striping, but the last pic. had planking. and do you shear webing on TE? would it be lighter W/O wing gears.

Larry,

It has just enough leading edge planking to make for a rounded leading edge. It's mostly cap stripped.

There are just some supports along the trailing edge to keep the covering from sagging between ribs. The trailing edge sheeting is only about 5/8" wide and didn't really need a full shear web. But I wanted to make sure that fairly long stretch of balsa wasn't completely unsupported. Easy place to get a warp but the supports should stop that.

Yea, there is easily 2oz in the gear blocks and hardware. So I suppose I get that weight back by not having a gear mount in the fuselage. The basic fuse box was about 4.5oz. Hopefully, with molded top block (I need to finish the mold) and the bottom block shown in the picture, the weight should be reasonable. The wood for the rear bottom block is some of the lightest wood I've ever had. The middle part you see is actually going to be part of the cowling. Much like Ted's Special Edition, the section over the pipe will be removable. I have an idea on how to attach it. It's tack glued on right now for shaping. I'll get to that when I finish up shaping the tips on the wing and do the rough sanding.

HI Randy,

I have a Hunt Mustang wing ready to the point of applying covering.  All clear nitrate and sanded ready to go.  I am not real sure what the sq. in. is, with the cuffs it's just hard to tell.  It is bigger than a Saturn wing, though.   With everything including 3/8ths flaps, it's about 12 oz.!  I used good wood through out, and it's just that heavy.  Built in the lost foam jig, and stiffer than a petrified rock, I don't really know where I could have removed anymore "significant" weight.  I guess I could have "outlined and ribbed" the flaps, but they are solid as they are, and I don't like flexi-flaps.  Next is the polyspan and assembly!

The stab/elev are covered, primed, sanded, and ready to apply the base coat and the assembly is ~2 1/2 oz. with horn and hinges.  Don't know if that's good or bad for that set up.  But it don't flex, either.  Guess we will just see when the whole thing comes together!  (now I got to go and find that color code for Mantz's Bendix Trophy Winner and order the Randolphs! ;D

That's why I got a camera with a self stabilizing feature. It takes a pretty clear picture even when I'm vibrating around.

Randy man, I love your work. My dream engine is to still get one of your Saito intake manifolds on a 72.

Po,

Be glad to do one for you. Just let me know the size and where to send it.   (PE**)

edit

Probably should have the type of needlevalve too so I can get the hole right. Or I could leave it undrilled and you could try the spigot system that has been discussed on the other board. That's an intriguing idea.

Oh, and sice it's for a 72, the manifold tube diameter. Is it the same as the 56?

Randy, sorry for the delayed response. Got into a heavy session in CAD. I was thinking about you and I collaborating on my coming Saito 62.

With what I have learned about driving Saito's through the pattern, and your prior work on your 56, I think there is the potential for a an absolutely kick-ass FA-62. I am talking about something to rival the Beringers work,(I know what they do).

Mark,

I'm working on it...sorta. I've been distracted by other stuff and haven't touched it in a week. Hope to get back to it soon.

The good news is, my sinus infection is just about cleared up.
